A bill that would outright ban marriages in New Jersey for boys and girls under 18 years old is now on hold, pending provision that would allow for some religious exceptions. Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin agreed to put the bill on hold, as a result of Assemblyman Gary Schaer’s insistence that religious accommodations be made.
Former Governor Chris Christie vetoed a similar bill last year due to its lack of religious accommodations. Assemblyman Schaer, whose district includes Passaic, is working with his fellow legislators to craft reasonable religious exceptions with proper safeguards – such as parental consent – to protect those under 18.
Rabbi Avi Schnall, Director of Agudath Israel of America’s New Jersey office, lauds Assemblyman Schaer’s work on this issue. “Assemblyman Schaer, has once again demonstrated courage and leadership for the religious community,” says Rabbi Schnall. “ we do need to continue working together to simultaneously protect children in our state as well as the timeless religious liberties at the foundation of our country.”
When was the last time anyone heard of someone 17 or younger getting married in Lakewood. I haven’t.
The age of 18 is only the starting point. Eventualy they will move it up the same way they did with alcohol. Thats why its important to fight it from the begining. Thank you agudah and mr schaer
