UPDATED: One dead after vehicle crashes into tree in Lakewood (PHOTOS)

A person has died after a vehicle crashed into a tree in Lakewood, and police are searching for passengers who fled the scene, officials said.

The accident occurred shortly before midnight on Yale Drive.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel found a passenger unconscious, and CPR was initiated.

The driver and another passenger fled the scene, officials said.

The patient was transported to MMCSC where he was pronounced dead, an official told TLS.

Lakewood’s Detective Bureau, Traffic Safety division, CSI and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating.

UPDATE: The deceased has been identified as 44-year-old Arcadio Hernandez Marcos of Lakewood.

The driver, 22-year-old Eduardo Paez-Lopez of Lakewood and passenger, Arturo Barraza fled the scene were later located by responding patrol officers.

Further investigation by the Lakewood Traffic Safety Unit, Detective Bureau, the Ocean County Prosecutors Office and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department CSI Unit resulted in the arrest of Paez-Lopez for Death by Auto and Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Death. He was subsequently transported to the Ocean County Jail.
