Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Rumble strips on Rt. 9

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Hi,

When driving on Rt 9 at night, south of the lake, I often see pedestrians that are dressed in dark clothing walking on he side of the road. If a car would go to the shoulder, to pass a turning car, it can lead to the pedestrian getting hit.

I think placing rumble strips (like Rt. 88 has in the center) on the shoulders of the road would prevent cars from swerving to the shoulder, or at least slow them down.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

I will be attending a meeting with the sate DOT this month to discus a number of issues about Rt 9 and we will ask if they would allow these strips to be installed.

Ray

  1. What would be the point of the rumble strips? Cars go on the shoulder to pass a stopped/turning car. I dont think it would stop anybody from using the shoulder.

  2. I think we have enough external safety measures. At the root of the problem is drivers must always drive with care, and pedestrians cannot just walk on or near the road like no cars exist. An old-time slogan needs to resurface: “Look out for the other guy”!

  3. they should be wearing reflectors at night, the shoulder is to pull over if need be, or go around a car that’s turning left, no need for rumbling street
