Statement from Rabbi Aaron Kotler of Beth Medrash Govoha on Petirah of Steve Pfeffer Z”L

We are heartbroken to learn of the Petirah of our very dear Chaver R’ Steve Pfeffer Z”L.

Steve was a local askan, attorney, and one of the early builders of our Kehilla.

Back in the 1980’s, he led the battle to construct Lakewood’s first new Shul, Zichron Shneur, on Oak Knoll, which faced huge opposition from the entire then non-Orthodox neighborhood. His every interaction through his life was with pure נעימות, following the Torah way of דרכיה דרכי נועם.

He represented Beth Medrash Govoha for many years, with devotion, love, warmth, understanding and sensitivity. May his Aishes Chayil Jessica, and his sons Phillip, Adam and Harrison and his entire family know nechama among all of Klal Yisroel.

  1. Well said, R’ Ahron. The younger oilam doesn’t chapp the enormity of the battle the building of Zichron Shneur was. It was discussed in all media outlets. Even the NY Times ran a story on it, as I recall. It was very heated and protracted battle. Through it all, R’ Steve ld the way, with briallianc and sensitivity and, with H-shem’s help, was ultimately victorious. It also set a precedent for other shuls to be constructed in residential areas.

Perhaps someone ro TLS can post links to articles written at the time about this epic battle.
