Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: East End

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Honored Mayor,

I would like to start by thanking the mayor and township for all the recent accomplishments with the town’s infrastructure. More has been done this last year than the past 5 combined. The additional traffic lights and fixed streets really add to the quality of life in Lakewood. We appreciate all that you have done and continued to do.

I want to bring to your attention that there is a major problem for the residents of Park Ave/East End Neighborhood. The traffic light by County Line and East End. The people coming from the Villas have a “no turn on red”. This causes them all to wait at the light. By the time it turns green there are 10 cars there. Those cars have the right of way. Therefore, they go first and only one or 2 cars can go from East End Ave. It’s a single lane, which causes that only one car can get through the light if there’s someone making left. The township allowed an overwhelming amount of new houses to be built in the neighborhood without any upgrade to the infrastructure. You can literally wait 4 lights to make a left onto County Line. This is the only street in the neighborhood with a traffic light to exit onto County Line since there is none on Park Ave.
I think that this issue that needs to be addressed to relieve some congestion in the neighborhood.

Thanking you in advance,
A concerned resident on Park Ave.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

Committeeman Lichtenstein and I met with the Freeholder Kelly and John Ernst, the county engineer, a few weeks ago. We discussed many topics regarding needed improvements to county roads. East End was one of those we discussed. Mr. Ernst said he would have his team look onto East End and see what they could do to improve the flow through timing adjustments or other improvements.

Thanks for reaching out,

Ray

  1. I agree with the letter writer, it is very difficult to make a left turn from east end onto county line. a quick small fix would be to allow the cars coming from the villas and agway to make a right turn on red. even though this will not help much, it is better than nothing.

  2. If no parking would be allowed on East End Avenue from Harvard to County Line, there could be room for a left turning lane, then at least the cars going straight or turning right could get through.

  3. Or they should atleast have ppl coming from the Villas and from East End separate green light times (like Cross St/Rt 9 have). This is a basic fix that can be done much quicker than any larger changes. And they should definitely ban parking on East End near the light.

  4. we need a few people from each area to be the spokesman for that area, the people in the area know their traffic issues best, and can present it to the mayer, I think this would be a great idea in helping make traffic run a little smoother

  5. I blame all the traffic problems on the Planning Board. I have been to many board meetings where the builders bring in their “traffic experts” to tell the Board the there will be no detriment to the present traffic pattern with the addition of this new development….
The streets are too small and stop building cul-de-sac and build through streets.

  6. they need to make twin oaks a delayed light. Make east end go first so that some cars can make a left. I am there everyday on east end sometimes i have to sit for about 5 lights before i can go.
