Letter: At the end of my rope

I know I’m probably reiterating what has been stated many times, but why is school starting SO LATE?

Why are the girls still sitting home after more than 2 months of summer vacation?

Why must my children be bored bored bored because my husband and I can’t take off more work to entertain them?

Why are the day camps and camps after camps so exorbitantly overpriced, which I’m forced to send because of work, yet work doesn’t cover the expense and will spend the ENTIRE YEAR paying out those funds, only to be bombarded again for the following summer come Purim time?

Why have the boys started school but not the girls?

If the answer is busing, I’m sure many parents would prefer to have school without buses for a few days than no school.

If the answer is that teachers need a “break”, well they’ve been on break all summer long, way more than any other working person.

Please don’t tell me that it’s not the school’s job to “babysit” my kids, because that answer is ridiculous. Even once school starts, there will barely be any days before Succos. Can we please change this system now???

At the end of my rope,

PLEASE DON’T SIGN MY NAME!

  1. I can’t agree with you more. I want to add how will our children know anything about the yomim norahim and that Elul is a serious month not a time to fool around.

  2. The camps are at fault because they either had a shorter summer or started too early. Girls schools are going with the same schedule they have been for years.

  3. That’s right! They should be in school this week learning about YT instead of sitting at home doing nothing! How long can you shop for school supplies???

  4. It isn’t a manageable situation for 2 working parents. And it’s really nice that the boys started but mine only had school till 12 this whole week. It’s impossible

  5. Really can’t believe Lakewood didn’t work on fixing this issue. Lakewood is the only place that could have made that all girls schools start early. I spoke to my daughters school and they told me that Bais Faiga sets the starting date for all schools!!

  6. this is an interesting letter but it’s not the first year this has happened. you all want more school time but most of us cannot afford even the minimum tuition that is required today. if the teachers under this years schedule (or any other year’s, as a matter of fact) have to work more days, who is going to pay that extra salary? all over the united states, almost every school follows the same schedule and many, if not most, have 2 working parents. who pays for their baby sitters all summer long? this year’s situation did not come as a surprise. why wasnt everyone planning all year how to make this year work?

  7. I don’t get why the schools have a full week of half days.

The -not so- funny part about it, their excuse is ‘ well everyone else is doing it’ is getting old.

Our schools aren’t being managed well.

  8. Although school starts officially in Israel on Sept 1, school started in the Beis Yaakov schools on August 27 this year . That means the students could learn about the Yomim Noroim and get into a more serious school mode before the Sukkos break.

  9. Hi. Let’s look ahead to next year, Tish b Av Aug 11. And then Vacation Rosh H September 30. Now what do we do. Let’s go shopping early. And No Vacation break Start school September 1.

  10. Worry more about making sure all girls are in school. Both elementary and high school. Think about how they would feel if school startes

  11. I feel like for the homes with two working parents (I belong to this group) it is so incredibly difficult and crystal clear that every day until school starts is a challenge. However: I do want to mention that for the homes with the husband in learning and the wife is working are not having it any easier. Kollel is in full swing and the Mama needs to go to work but there are children at home with no Camp or school!!

  12. Agree!!!! The girls should be in school! They are ready for structure!!! Not only do they not have school now but some schools added a week at the end of the school year too!!! So now when the kids are craving school there is none but at the end of the year when they are jumping out of their skin with summer fever they add another week!!!!!!! That’s NEVER going to be a good thing! So some girls will be in camp and some in school???? And of course no bussing!!!! Schools should’ve started already and should NOT have an additional week at the end!!!!! It’s ridiculous!!!!!

  13. If schools are in it for chinuch habanim/banos, they’d start already… I don’t want to hear how hard the teachers work & need a break. Don’t like the field – there are plenty of openings in the back of the BP. As a school, do whats right for the kids.

  14. I think they start after labor day for bussing reasons. If school would have started, everyone would have to carpool which also is not feasible if you’re working. So either complain that there is no school or no bussing. Either way you’ll find something to complain about. K’siva v’chasima tovah!

  15. Sorry, don’t agree. I am enjoying the non pressure days of not getting kids out in the morning and no homework. I don’t have any boys in elementary school.
The summer was not any longer. Day camp started very very early.

  16. Come to Cleveland. The boys started two weeks ago and the girls today. Oh, and we have school vouchers, plus all highschool girls (and elementary school girls too for that matter) are in school.

  17. Totally agree.. but what good will this forum do, nothing is going to change anyways. I have this problem every midwinter, chanuka break, and every other time playgroups and schools randomly decide to close

  18. If i was working out of the house now it’s true that it would be very very hard and i really understand the issue…. but as someone who’s home with her children right now I’m loving it!
No pressure, no bus, no homework! I truly enjoy my kids company!

  19. All over america Frum schools have summer vacation mid winter vacation Chanukah vacation snow days for some reason ppl in lakewood can not handle it when their kids have off every where else in the world there are working parents and they have the same vacations and they don’t complain they fit their job to their family I’m happy for my kids that they didn’t start yet the school year is long enough

  20. I totally agree with Relax. Children cherish these small vacations. It is time to relax and spend time with their Mothers! Let’s stop the blame game. Btw, what is your opinion? That school should start the day after camp ends. Our non-stop hectic lifestyle is very sad, and NOT the Torah way!!! When I was young, I looked forward for the week after school before camp, and the time after camp before school. We visited my grandparents and spent family time.

    • Unfortunately not all of us can pay our bills if we take off a week here and there from work. It’s not a matter of wanting a non-stop hectic lifestyle, it’s a matter of the rent has to get paid. We are a family with two working parents and our jobs will not always approve days off that coincide with school breaks (everyone wants these same days off so it makes sense). We also have no family (parents, siblings, or cousins) that our kids can go to for a day as a favor. I wish I could simply cherish the free time with my kids. I have to make sure they have enough food to eat and a roof over their heads.

  21. Everyone take a chill !!
When they’re in school , they’re complaining they need a vacation.
When they have vacation, they complain they want school
    U can’t win !!
Just Enjoy the time with your children when they don’t hsve the pressures of homework/ tests etc

  22. How about if camps would have 3 parts instead if two. That would be the new way. This way camp would go all the way until school starts and it would work since the camps make money to entertain our children..NOW THIS IS REAL SOLUTION!
