The Weekly National News Roundup – by Shlomo Rudman

NAFTA Being Replaced – In a Monday morning news conference, President Trump announced a two-country trade deal with Mexico to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement, commonly referred to as NAFTA, a deal which Trump has often lambasted as being unfair to the United States. Trump administration negotiators are in talks with Canada’s PM Justin Trudeau regarding having America’s northern neighbor a partner in the deal.

WH Lowers Flag After Criticism – After the death of John McCain, the White House lowered its flags to half-staff on Sunday to honor the late Senator, but raised it again early Monday morning. Typically, flags are left at half-staff through the interment of the individual being honored. After widespread criticism of Trump’s apparent pettiness over the death of his political foe McCain, the White House reversed its position, once again lowering the flag late Monday afternoon.

Trump Accuses Google Of Bias  – In a tweet, President Trump decried what he said was algorithms by the search giant Google designed to only show negative stories about him. A video posted on the President’s Twitter account claimed that Google promoted the State of the Union addresses made by President Obama on its homepage, but stopped doing so when Trump took office. Google disputed the claims, saying that the Presidents first address to Congress isn’t technically a State of the Union address, and therefore didn’t promote it.

Study: 2,975 Killed In Hurricane – A study commissioned by the Puerto Rican government shows that the current official death toll of 64 from Hurricane Maria is far off, with the actual toll being 2,975. President Trump responded to the study by saying he believes the US government did a “fantastic” job in responding to the hurricane and its aftermath.

McGahn Out – President Trump announced in a tweet that White House Counsel Donald McGahn would be leaving his post in the fall, following the midterms and the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. While the White House spun McGahn’s departure as being his own choice, Trump strongly implied in a Thursday morning tweet that he fired McGahn, tweeting that the Russia investigation played no role in “my decision on Don McGahn”. White House ethics lawyer Stefan Passantino announced his own departure, effective Thursday, shortly after Trump said McGahn would be leaving.

Email Controversy – In a tweet, President Trump claimed that Chinese hackers had penetrated Hillary Clinton’s private email servers, and were able to see her emails in real time. A spokesman for the FBI disputed the President’s claims, saying they had no information to suggest that the Chinese or anyone else had gained access to the private server of the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate.

Papadopoulos Accepts Plea Deal – After months of uncertainty, Trump campaign operative George Papadopoulos accepted a plea deal from Special Counsel Robert Mueller over his alleged lying to prosecutors regarding his communication with a professor who prosecutors say had extensive connections with Russian officials. As part of the agreement, Papadopoulos agreed to cooperate with Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference during the 2016 elections.
