International Daf Hashovua Marks Siyum of Yet Another Masechta

Last week, all over the world, balei batim, and yeshivaleit joined together for a siyum on Masechta Ta’anis. However, this wasn’t

just a siyum on learning a masechta. This was a siyum on being “koineh” a masechta. All had learned the masechta with the international Daf Hashovua program, a program that helps participants learn in a structured & consistent manner, with chazora, and even offers weekly bechinos. Marei m’komos, both in Hebrew and English, are also available on their website www.dafaweek.org or by emailing [email protected].

In Lakewood, there were a few especially memorable siyumim, at Khal Tiferes Shmuel in Hearthstone, at Rabbi Gissinger’s shul and in the Prospect Park Shul. The members of the Daf Hashovua kollel had the privilege of hearing divrei chizuk from Harav Moshe Scheinerman Shlit”a, of Flatbush. In his inimitable way, Rabbi Scheinerman extolled the virtues of Daf Hashovua. “I have a program similar to Daf Hashovua in my Shul for many years” he said, “and I’ve clearly seen the positive results of ba’alei batim learning b’iyun”. Rabbi Scheinerman continued by saying an amazing psak of Reb Baruch Ber Lebowitz, “that even if, for whatever reason, a gadol hador is in an “ir miklat”, the talmid of another rebbe, albeit not a gadol hador, is also in the “ir miklat”, the talmid may demand that his rebbe come, even though the gadol hador is there”. “The reason is” said Rabbi Scheinerman, “that he shouldn’t even lose a “knaitch” of a sevara.” “You too”, thundered Rabbi Scheinerman, “should not give up a “knaitch” of a sevara.”

Rabbi Scheinerman concluded by praising this group of ba’alei batim for waking up early to learn a full hour before Shachris. He told of a member of his kehilla who initially balked at the idea of waking up early, citing the fact that he was a surgeon who needed a full night sleep to perform surgery. “But after a few months of waking up early to learn,” relayed Rabbi Scheinerman, “he told me he had more strength than ever!”

Now that Daf Hashovua has just begun Maseches Megilah, many chaburos, both morning and night, all over the world and Lakewood have grabbed the opportunity to join.
