JUST IN: New Measles case confirmed in Lakewood

The following is a summary with new and ongoing information with respect to the measles outbreak from the Ocean County Health Department.

There are now 19 confirmed measles cases, which includes 1 new confirmed case. TLS has confirmed the patient is from Lakewood.
There is now 1 case under investigation.
The measles outbreak is presently defined by a rash onset date of October 17, 2018 through November 25, 2018.
The measles outbreak continues until at least 42 days after the last know infection. The last rash onset date is November 25, 2018 and 4 days of infection ended on November 29, 2018. Therefore, at present, at least 42 days must elapse from the date of November 29, 2018 prior to consideration of an end to the measles outbreak.
Vaccination is encouraged and those children involved with exposure to a confirmed case may be subject to an order of exclusion, if unvaccinated.
The Ocean County Health Department continues to support and highly encourage the exclusion of non-vaccinated children from schools, preschools and daycares in the outbreak area. These entities have the authority to make that decision when an outbreak has been declared by the New Jersey Department of Health. The age range so far for the current outbreak is 6 months to 59 years old.
People are reminded to check their immunization records and if there is any sign of symptoms to contact your healthcare provider prior to showing up at that provider’s office so that appropriate arrangements can be made for examination or treatment.
The potential for spreading infection exists four days prior and four days after a measles rash onset.
People can become ill from measles from 5 to 21 days after being exposed to the virus.
Measles-like symptoms include fever, rash, runny nose, cough, loss of appetite and pink eye.
Measles can spread through coughing and sneezing and can live on surfaces and in the air for up to two hours.
30% of measles cases involve additional serious health complications.
The Ocean County Health Department continues to communicate and coordinate daily with the State of New Jersey Department of Health and other healthcare providers in response to the measles outbreak.

  1. Don’t you think there is gross underreporting in the number? Someone who is an anti-vaxxer (and thus more prone to catch the measles) is also not running to the [medical] doctors (other than alternative medical practitioners); hence, these cases are not being reported. They are being kept home, and no one ever finds out!
    Just my speculation (conspiracy?).

    • You’re exactly right. I’ve personally heard of whole families that got measles and those numbers are not in the official confirmed numbers.

And to Tzvi P: the risk of death and complications is higher in immunocompromised people, infants, pregnant women, etc. You are putting those people at significant risk by not vaccinating.

  2. confused about the fuss with measles….

and especially the things yidden are saying about anti-vaxxers….

Judging people is a transgression of the Torah.

In my experience, every single anti-vaxxer has a good reason they dont vaccinate and I bless all of klal yisroel that there should not need to be one more mother to join the anti-vax because that means another child with a serious condition that happened right after vaccination….

  3. I had the MMR schedule as a child (I was born in 1968). This year I had it in a mild form. Now, here’s the thing…I came down with it in early to mid-September and no, I never went to a doctor. I self quarantine myself and placed food orders over the phone, so it was never reported. These cases we are seeing are, I believe, all rooted in International travel. Just as cases of leprosy occur in the US occassionlly. If you get leprosy here you either handled and probably ate an armadillo or came into contact with someone who had it – that person having come here from overseas. The measles outbreak brings something else to mind, however. That being the concept that you’re immune from anything you’re vaccinated for. Mumps if much more dangerous for adults, specifically males. I’d better stop here as any speech against vaccines gets you censored.

  4. If someone chas v’sholom contracts the measles, please inform them of the importance in taking VITAMIN A. For some reason, the measles depletes the body of it. I don’t know why along with all the other recommendations, this vital piece of information is not included. May everyone be gezunt!
