Letter: Complacency = Complicity

Last week, at the Lakewood Township meeting, a resolution was passed/approved that condemns the anti-Semitic actions of Rise Up Ocean County (RUOC).

While a similar resolution was present on the Jackson agenda, it has since disappeared. The Simon Wiesenthal Center has asked Jackson Township to publicly stand against the hateful behavior of RUOC; a page that has become a platform for hate and bigotry, creating greater divides among Ocean County residents. Our officials are, however, reluctant to do so, and we must encourage them and inspire them to stand with us against all forms of bias.

Tomorrow evening, there will be a Jackson Town Hall meeting taking 95 West Veterans Highway (in Jackson) beginning at 7:30 pm, with a press conference preceding it at 7:00 pm.

With the backing of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, I urge anyone who is capable of attending the meeting to do so. Anti Semitism is most certainly rising in Ocean County and the minds behind RUOC are inciting it, while hidden behind the safety of anonymity. While it may seem small now, we must stand up against it so that it does not grow.

Clergy from various faiths will be attending the meeting, as well as other elected officials from other Townships, to stand in support with the Jews of Ocean County. I am begging you — together with all the others who have been working together in trying to bridge the divide — to show up tomorrow. Do not expect others to stand up for you if you will not stand up for yourself. If you can, be brave enough to take the podium during the public portion of the meeting and speak up for yourself, as well.

Below is a list of email address for our elected officials, from senators to mayors to council members. You do not need to be a Jackson resident or homeowner to e-mail them. Please take the time to ask them to place the resolution back on the agenda and pass it. Please explain that, as Ocean County residents, you are feeling increasingly unsafe — the divisiveness, fear and hate that has emerged from a lack of understanding is only going to get worse. Allowing RUOC to continue unchecked will do more to create mistrust among the different demographics living within Ocean County than it will ever do in their ‘supposed’ mission of exposing corruption and addressing quality of life issues.

Please, ask them to take the time out of their schedules to show up at the Council meeting. Ask them to be willing and open to working together with us to bridge the gaps and correct the misinformation that is perpetuated against our community. Let them know that we need their support.
