A unique and memorable event was held today at the home of a prominent Lakewood Rav, Harav Simcha Bunim Cohen.
This afternoon, approximately 15 Bachurim from a Mesivta in New York were invited to the home of Rabbi Cohen after he learned that the boys had given up their smart phones and decided to use regular flip phones.
It all started when one boy, from Lakewood, destroyed his smartphone in an effort to grow in Yiddishkeit. The boy’s actions encouraged a couple of others in his Yeshivah, and then some others, totaling approximately 15 Bachruim.
Rabbi Cohen told the Bachurim how impressed he was with their ability to overcome this strong Nisayon, something he said is very rare in today’s world – and he asked them to give him a Bracha.
(Watch the Rav’s powerful words in the video below.)
Holding up a few folded papers, Rabbi Cohen exclaimed, “I have no cell phone – this is my phone,” and said instead of talking on the phone in the streets, he uses the opportunity to actually think clearly, and to thank Hashem.
After giving the boys Divrei Chizuk, Rabbi Cohen pulled out two Yarmulkas – one from Hagaon Rabbi Moshe Feinstein Zatzal, and one from Yb”l Hagaon Rav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita. (Watch the video to hear how the Rav obtained these rare items.)
The boys were then given the opportunity to wear both Yarmulkas, before receiving a Bracha from the Rav.
The memorable event concluded with singing and dancing.
Wow! Very inspiring! I wish I can do the same, but I just can’t get myself to do it. But I would like to create a website/advertising campaign to spread awareness and get people to make commitments to reduce/eliminate smartphone use, so if anyone interested in helping to fund something like this, please let me know.
Just amazing ! Time to work on yungerleit and Balei batim as well

Thanks for the interesting video!
One comment – the fact that the special yarmulkas were worn on top of, instead of replacing, the regular yarmulka, diminished the experience for me.
Although I can see reasons why they did it that way.
