Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Stop signs

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Hi there Mr. Mayor.

I present the following question,

As someone who drives around town often, I notice a more critical error in the basics of obeying driving laws.

“Stop Signs” are too often disobeyed in this Town, and this concern creates a grave danger to Pedestrians and vehicles alike (in some ways more than any other driving matter). You’ll notice repeatedly, as you’re driving down US-9, it’s clearly very visible from a distance on approach at 40-50 mph, from 1st Street all the way through E-kennedy and reverse, cars often going foo far, past a stop sign, which poses serious fear and safety hazard. This occurs all over town in general, which I’m sure is something that is well known.

It’s there any way that the township or Law Enforcement, can remedy this very real concerning matter and ongoing dismissal?

Thanks for taking the time to read and respond Mr. Mayor, as we greatly appreciate the hard work you have done for this township.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Good morning,

As someone whose job takes him all over the tri state area, we are not the only town that could use some more common sense and common courtesy when we drive. I know that Chief Meyer takes this very seriously. I will speak with him again and see if we can do some education & enforcement. When I go to town hall from home or work, I travel down Ridge to East 7th. There are quite a few 4 way stop intersections along the way. I have to say that the overwhelming majority of drivers I encounter at these intersections are courteous, wait their turn and obey the proper flow.

Ray

  1. Dear mayor ,

No reason it should not be a TOP priority for chief Myers. Many people are very impatient especially by 4 way stop signs. Why does someone have to get seriously hurt for something to be done

    • I’m so glad that where you drive, people respect the stop signs. On my drives daily around town, it seems that stop signs have become optional. It would not be an exaggeration to say that I have been almost hit by cars blowing stop signs at least twice a week every single week. What is normal about that?!?

  2. Go down on any given day on madison av/river av,central av, carranetta dr, county line, rt 88 just to mantion a few, and you will see how people actually think stop signs are optional. I see it every sinhle day.

  3. If every car that goes through the stop sign on Railroad St and Rt 88 heading west was ticketed daily the town would make I’ll bet $50,000 a week. Add the cell phone abuse you could double it.

Seems only the State Police enforce those violations the few times they are here.
    WHY IS THAT?
