Port Authority, NJ Transit Upgrade Websites

nj-transit-website.jpgTwo agencies that oversee the region’s mass transit, major airports and river crossings are looking to improve traffic flow – on their websites. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and NJ Transit have unveiled upgraded sites that they say are more consumer-friendly for the millions of people who use their transportation facilities.  The Port Authority’s site (www.panynj.info) has been overhauled for the first time in 13 years and will be available at airport welcome centers. Calling it a marriage of technology and transparency, Port Authority representatives say the site provides one-stop shopping for customers in need of quick information.

It has an improved real-time alert system to notify customers of incidents and events at agency facilities, and the ability to find a quick, convenient way to get to a destination on mass transit using multiple transit systems.

“Customer service is a critical component of the Port Authority’s mission to improve mobility in our region,” said Anthony Coscia, the bi-state agency’s chairman. “Making it easier to navigate online with our new Web site will enhance the public’s real-world traveling experiences at our facilities.”

During a survey two years ago, the agency’s customers said they wanted better maps to help them around Port Authority facilities, improved navigation to help them easily find information and airport information that is refreshed continuously.

The upgraded site includes an improved real-time alert system to notify customers of incidents and events at Port Authority facilities; the ability to find the most convenient way to get to a destination on mass transit using multiple agency transit systems; current weather conditions and public transit options, and the ability to better locate bus carriers serving specific destinations.

The NJ Transit site (www.njtransit.com) also has had a complete makeover, with a streamlined look and expansion of the “DepartureVision” feature that allows customers to view train departure screens on their computers or mobile devices.

The pages most heavily used by customers, including schedule and station information pages, have design improvements that will enable riders to view more information on a single page, reducing the need to click back and forth between pages, officials said.

Among the features:

• A homepage trip planner that presents three itineraries instead of one and integrates Google Maps to provide a representation of the trip.

• At-a-glance service status for rail, light rail and bus lines, with a color-coded chart that displays “on time” status or provides a link to “view alert.”

• A “breaking news bar” in the event of service disruption. Star Ledger
