Effective Immediately: Rear Seat Passengers Must Wear Safety Belts

seatbelt_jpgPolice Chief Rob Lawson asked TLS to reminds our readers about the new seat belt law now in effect, signed by Governor Corzine, as previously reported on TLS. The new law requires all rear seat passengers to wear seat belts and will be treated as a secondary offense. Meaning, when a driver of a passenger automobile has been detained for some other suspected violation, the passenger can then be ticketed for the new seat belt law as well. “Each rear seat passenger 18 years of age or older of a passenger automobile shall be responsible for any fine imposed pursuant to section 6 of P.L.1984, c.179 (C.39:3-76.2j) for failure to wear a seat belt pursuant to subsection c. of section 2 of P.L.1984, c.179 (C.39:3-76.2f).1″

  1. this means that any drivers who stop illegally to pick up illegal hitchikers should atleast make sure that his / her passengers clik it or risk a tickit

  2. Just a little point I’d like to add to all those Opposed to this new law.

When an individual in a vehicle is not properly secured, they risk the lives of everyone INside the car and OUTside the car as well. Their bodies can become a danger to others if they are getting tossed around the car hitting other passengers, or get thrown out a window and hit other drivers and/or pedestrians.

  3. to 3t hat is rediculous, did you ever hear of someone getting hurt not because he got hit by the car ,but by a passennger that wasnt seat belted in sounds wild. A 2nd point I dont see why the govt has a right to tell us what to do. Maybe they will start telling us we all have to drive volvos cause it is the safest car,and it doesnt end there what about eating habits, being overweight is dangerous, no more cake. They should have absoulutely no right to tell us anything about our personal lives, if it affects other people that is a different story

  4. Maybe the state should make sure that our beds have bedrails? When do the inspectors come in to check out how much we’re eating? Are the soles of my shoes ‘non-slip’ enough? Does my coat meet State Safety Warmth guidelines? ENOUGH ALREADY! Corzine got hurt because of excessive speed – that’s already a law. Feel good legislation! As far as #3 – all due respect, Unrestained passengers are not a danger to people inside and outside of the car – unrestrained objects are! Hey! Let’s make a law…

  5. hey fresser . maybe u will be exempted from this law because u need to fress on the road. how can one fress being belted in . we undersrand your dillema

  7. Mazal Tov, Obviously, you are not in the EMS field, so you haven’t a clue what can go wrong in a car accident. There have been Several cases, where an unbelted passenger either fell onto and injured a person in the car, or was thrown from the windshield onto another car, causing them to crash as well.

Before posting what is “ridiculous” or not, have the facts straight.
