Gov. Christie Signs Toughest Anti-Bullying Bill In The Nation

christie signing lawGov. Chris Christie has signed a bill advocates say gives New Jersey the toughest anti-bullying law in the nation. Christie signed the “Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights,” according to a press release from Garden State Equality, which advocated for the bill. The new law is intended to eliminate loopholes in the state’s first anti-bullying law, passed in 2002, that encouraged school districts to set up anti-bullying programs but did not mandate it.

It will require training for most public school teachers, administrators and other employees on how to spot bullying and mandate that all districts form a “school safety team” to review complaints. School districts would be graded by the state on their efforts to combat the problem. Read more in Star Ledger.

  1. FINALLY a posting about bullying. This is a HUGE issue in our schools. Children who get bullied are emotionally destroyed. They lose ther self confidence and lose their ability to function properly both in school and at home. Many parents and mechanchim are not aware of the long term effects bullying has on childrens developement. Schools need to institute shmira during recess, on busses, and must be aware of both those who bully and who get bullied. Schools should have mandated trainings for all staff to educate and raise awareness of this most pressing issue.

  2. i HOPE this trickles down to the local yeshivahs. Some of the bullying that I went through and that current boys go through is horrifying. The rebbeyim and menahels do very little, saying ‘boys will be boys”, but it has to stop and this is a very good law.

  3. #2 is right. The buses, especially, are a problem, with the only adult on board driving the bus. There should be adult monitors. This is the wrong place to save money. (For those who are not aware, in New York there MUST be an adult monitor on school buses; in New Jersey that is prohibited for insurance reasons – otherwise known as $$$$$ reasons. LUDICROUS.)

  4. To – Mom says – “…in New York there MUST be an adult monitor on school buses;…”

So why don’t you move back to NY if you want monitors on the buses?

  5. we want it vetoed because it could require schools to teach their students to accept students with different lifestyles that are against torah

    NONSENSE !!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. As someone who was bullied in my yeshiva elementry years, i can tell u it still affects me today. And they yeshiva did NOTHING about it. Shame on them….
