Assembly Transportation Committee Chair John S. Wisniewski (D-Middlesex) today hailed the statewide survey released by The National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR) showing that New Jersey voters strongly support the use of red light safety cameras and want them in their communities.
“What is evident in this research is that drivers in this state are cognizant that red light safety cameras are indeed keeping our roads safer and saving lives by modifying driving behavior”, Wisniewski said.
“When I authored this bill, it was with one goal only in mind – saving lives. These cameras are making a difference and doing just that in towns throughout New Jersey”.
“I commend the National Coalition for Safer Roads for undertaking this detailed survey. By demonstrating the viability of this program, hopefully it will support our efforts to expand it and make it permanent”.
“Armed with knowledge on how these cameras work, the public now understands and embraces the value that this technology offers”.
“Now is the time to make them available to more municipalities throughout the state in order to mitigate the problems associated with dangerous intersections in our cities and towns”.
However, Lakewood residents for the most part are not excited about the idea.
In a Poll on TLS this past March, over 53% of voters said they don’t think the cameras are a good idea. Over 1,000 took the poll.
Wisniewski was the sponsor of Assembly Bill A-4314, signed into law in January of 2008, which established a pilot program allowing municipalities to install traffic control signal monitoring systems at approved intersections.
I guess he didn’t read the article in the APP which stated it did NOT reduce accidents at the intersections they were installed at, HOWEVER it did increase the revenue the towns collected in fines.
I wonder if they let visitors into his happy place.
Well here is the problem ,here in lakewood there are many drivers who do not obey the rules of the road , so of course they would be opposed to it . These cameras are not just a good idea they will make you think twice about running red lights and those who choose to ignore obeying trafic signals will pay with a heffty fine,that will be a great incentive to change the behavior of those who think the rules don’t apply to them and make the roads safer, which here in Lakewood should be a very welcome thing
They should install them, but if you do run a red light it should only be points. No fine! They will do that if they really care about the safety for us. But they do not, that’s why there is a big fine.
Put them at every intersection. More cash flow to the town means less burden on home owners for property taxes. If someone blows through a red light , they should get a ticket. In case anyone did not know, the only time you will be getting a ticket is if you are behind the white line and the light is red and you go through the intersection. You are not getting a ticket if you are behind the white line and its yellow and then while you are crossing it, it turns red
you will never ever, see them in Lakewood
yes it will bring in some money ,however it will have no effect on your taxes at all . All trafic violations if guilty carry a fine so forget about points only! Lakewood needs these cameras badly to stem the poor driving habits that we see on a daily basis !
It can’t be points because you can’t prove who was in the car so on whose license would the points go. You can fine the owner of the car and let him take it up with the driver.
I think its a great idea. If the law says no running red lights, it means that.
People will just find ways to avoid them and be running stops signs on side roads. Locks only keep honest people honest.
They don’t like it because then most residents can not pull into the intersection before making a turn because once you pass over that line you are caught. And a ticket comes in the mail with your plate and violation..
This is a wonderful idea for any town..especially in Lakewood. The State Police and Lakewood Traffic Unit do a wonderful job of enforcing Title 39, however sheer evidence from the cameras will not allow to contest the summons in the court of law!!
