VIDEO: 2 Children Struck after Vehicle Crashes through Bike Path and Into Tree; Driver Caught

VIDEO: [UPDATED] Two children on bikes were struck after a driver crashed through a bike path and into a tree this morning.

Shortly before 11 a.m., Police and Hatzolah were summoned to South Lake Drive for multiple reports of a pedestrian struck on the South Lake Drive bike path. Upon arrival, emergency personnel learned that two children riding bicycles were struck by a vehicle which lost control. One of the children was pinned under the vehicle, but managed to climb out, a first responder said.

The driver fled the scene on foot.

One of the victims, an approximately 6 year old boy, was transported by Hatzolah to Jersey Shore Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries.

The suspect is described as a white male with tattoos.

Lakewood’s Traffic & Safety division and CIU are investigating the incident. Part of South Lake Drive is closed for the investigation.

UPDATE 1:25 p.m: The suspect – who had an arm injury as a result of the accident – was apprehended by police in a nearby home. He was transported to Police Headquarters. [TLS]

  1. #1 I am confused, as the article says white male with tattoos and the plate is a temp, not out of state.
hire more police is part of the answer

  2. It said a temporary plate??? Does anyone read what is written, maybe it was a Lakewood Resident. Oh what a surprise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. What in the world does hiring more officers have to do with this ?
Yes you may be correct but there is just no money to pay for it unless you would like to

  4. ” hire more police is part of the answer”

REALLY??? YOU DONT REMEMBER A TIME IN HISTORY WHEN A GROWING POLICE STATE LED TO AN EXTERMINATION OF OVER 1,000,000 PEOPLE? NEW JERSEY ALREADY HAS A TON OF COPS. TOWNS HAVE -12 POLICE OFFICERS ON PATROL. GO DOWN SOUTH, WHERE 3 COPS PATROL A ZONE THE SIZE OF OCEAN COUNTY. MAGICALLY – THINGS GO FINE.

what we need is politicians, judges, and prosecutors who actually incarcerate people, versus letting them walk with a slap on the wrist. our criminal justice system is a joke. criminals are NOT afraid to repeat offenses or create new one on their records.

  5. I agree with Mr Conservative that we need more work done with our criminal justice system because it is a joke when it comes to certain violations committed especially ones pertaining to vehicles that are being operated by irresponsible people. An uninsured motorist killed my 23 year old daughter and received a ticket for not having insurance rather than operating the uninsured vehicle. This driver subsequently got one thousand dollar fine, thirty day’s community service and he lost his license for 18 months, why so little, because he was not found to be at fault for the accident, yet he operated an illegal car on public roads and risked the lives of others and himself. That’s a slap on the hand in my book. He was not going to be charged for the accident because they said they could not charge him with anything.

  6. #11, wow – i am so sorry to hear that. may she, your angel, rest in peace. wow that just hit me like a bag of bricks. im really sorry to hear your story.

that driver should have received involuntary manslaughter charges. he shouldn’t have been doing what he did(driving) and since he was on the road doing what he shouldn’t have = she is dead. its the same in my opinion as someone being irresponsible with a gun and killing someone.

  7. More police = more power to the government. Especially in today’s times, when we finally realize that there is a very strong possibilty of a dictator coming to power in America in the near future, more police is NOT the answer.

The truth is that there is no answer. There will always be drunk people who crash into others. There will always be crazy people. There will always be thiefs and murderers, no matter what we do. Evil people will always exist.

We need to learn to accept that bad things sometimes happen. Life is full of uncertainty – and we need to live our lives to the fullest because there may not be a tomorrow. Is it possible that tomorrow something bad will happen? Absolutely! But if you are constantly in a state of anxiety, you will have a miserable life.

Be good to others – be a good, decent human being, and stop worrying, and you will have lived a satisfying and fulfilled life.

  8. “Time to hire more officers.”

thanks but no-thanks. our police-state is large enough, with the highest paid officers in the nation. anymore, and we’ll be shining their shoes and handing over our paychecks in full.
what we need is a society that can take care of itself, versus growing more & more reliant upon the government taking care of us from cradle to grave.
