Lakewood Commuter Witnesses Suicide Off Driscoll Bridge

A Lakewood resident tells TLS he witnessed a suicide off of the Driscoll Bridge while commuting to work this morning. At about 8 a.m., the commuter was driving on the Driscoll Bridge when he witnessed a driver get out of his car and jump.

“He pulled over in his car, opened his door and ran right over the barrier – smack in the middle of the bridge,” the witness, who immediately phoned police, said.

The witness said the jumper knew what he was doing.

“It happened so fast, literally not even stopping to think – he knew exactly what he was doing – no hesitation,” the witness told TLS.

Sergeant Adam Grossman of the New Jersey State Police confirmed to TLS that the jumper was dead.

Sgt Grossman says there were multiple witnesses to the unfortunate incident which occurred shortly after 8:00 a.m.

The NJSP and Woodbridge Police received multiple calls about the jumper, who Grossman says walked out of a green Cadillac. Marines from the NJSP and the Woodbridge Police were dispacthed to the scene.

Two boaters below located the floating body, which was brought to the shore by the Woodbridge Police.

The jumper, pronounced dead on the shore, was identified as 74 year old Robert Stucker, from Cranford, Grossman told TLS.

No foul play is suspected, but the incident left an indelible mark on the multiple witnesses.

“I’m still in shock,” the witness says. “I wish I didn’t see it.” [TLS]
