Motorists Support More Education and Practice for Teen Drivers, Survey Shows

1While New Jersey’s teens face a number of license restrictions during their Graduated Driver License (GDL) period, motorists overwhelming believe they would benefit from more education and practice. According to a survey released by AAA, motorists agree with the Assembly Transportation committee, which recently supported measures to require practice hours and a parent-teen orientation.

The AAA Clubs of New Jersey have long advocated for the inclusion of these provisions as a solid foundation for a lifetime of safe driving.

“New Jersey continues to lag behind when it comes to ensuring teen drivers are getting the proper education and practice to build good habits to keep themselves and our roads safe.” Tracy Noble, spokesperson for AAA Mid-Atlantic, said. Study after study shows that parental involvement is a key component to successful driver education and a successful GDL, 72 percent of motorists agree and would support a parent teen orientation program as part of GDL, a proposal included in A3606.

Parents who have attended a parent teen orientation program such as the state’s Share the Keys Program, as well as similar programs in other states that require programs as part of the GDL, have found the programs to be beneficial.

An even greater majority, 77 percent, believe that New Jersey should join the other 46 states in requiring practice hours before receiving a full license, a provision included in A3607.

23“The best way to learn to be a safe driver, is behind the wheel with an engaged supervising driver,” Noble said. “Our survey shows that motorists feel the same way and the only way to ensure that teens are getting practice time behind the wheel is to make it part of the GDL requirements.”

“New Jersey has long been a leader in implementing GDL restrictions that ensure our teens are safe on the roadways, now we need to implement proven educational tools to ensure we are providing teens with a solid foundation for a lifetime of safe driving,” Noble added.
