EXCLUSIVE: Emergency care delayed after First Responders confuse street names in Lakewood; Township takes Action

ems lfa tlsThe frightening scenario first responders predicted could happen, happened.

Last month, first responders in Lakewood expressed their concern to TLS about the similar-sounding street names in Lakewood, and the nightmare that could emerge.

According to sources, this past weekend, first responders were delayed to a call because they could not figure out which street they were heading to, due to another street same with a similar name. It took about 30 seconds for them to figure it out and confirm which street the call was on, sources said.

Thankfully the call wasn’t too serious, but “it could have been,” said a first responder.

He added – though not referring to this call – “why would you name a street Eden Lane, which is off James Street, when you have a street Eden Court, off of Apple Street?” (Lakewood also has some interesting-sounding street names, but that’s another discussion.)

TLS reached out to Township officials, and we were told that the Township has begun cracking down, and have stopped approving street names that could be confused with existing ones.

An official told TLS that the Township just changed a new street from Rachel Lane to Trudy Lane – but that was before the street was occupied. Once a street becomes occupied, the official said, changing a street name becomes much more problematic.

  1. It may be hard to change the street name but it is NOT impossible! Stop being lazy and do the leg work before some dies. It is ridiculous to think that a little work to change a name is too much when it could very possibly mean someones life is at stake.
    In this very town when I was growing up, they were very capable of changing our street name as well as a few others due to development. Why was it possible in the 1980’s but not now? I think someone is spending too much time writing excuses instead of writing new street names…

  2. Please be careful with the naming of streets. Some street name, which appear to be Jewish, will be very confusing for dispatchers to pronounce and drivers to understand if they, themselves, are not Jewish.

  3. it would be beneficial for anyone living on such a street to teach their family to add a simple identifier like “off of …..” etc. no reason to wait for others to fix this it’s important so lets be proactive

  4. This is ridiculous in 2016. Why are they navigating manually? Do they not have a system to send the information to the responders’ phone automatically? Which they will then use in conjunction with waze or Google maps?

  5. How about in Kew Garden Hills, Queens New York. They have 73rd Road, 73rd Terrace, 73rd Ave. etc. One must speak clearly and say the cross streets. I have never heard of an issue there . I have lived there.

  6. What about development names that are the same as street names? …. for example, Tuscany Terrace (the street) in County Line Manor (the development), and Bartenura (the street) in Tuscany (the development) which mind you are both off of County Line Rd just a couple of 100 yards from eachother.

  7. Believe it or not, but ten blocks spread all over town with similar names;
    Park Ave – Park Place – Park Side – Park view – Park Terrace – Pine Park – Rose Park – Lake Park – Laurel Park
    P.s. I forgot about Park Ave South…

  8. East End Ave. and East End St. cross one another, so there is an intersection of East End and East End. Craziness! At least over there you know where to find it.

  9. No Matter how many streets you do in town there will be doubles. You have to remember to tell the dispatchers and even 9-1-1 dispatchers when they confirm your street name what it is..Some Comm Officers will verify it 2 or 3 x’s before even getting off the phone just to make sure. Changing streets that have been in town for years is not going to help
