A bill sponsored by Assemblymen Sean Kean and David Rible bill that would allow filing of birth certificate to be delayed for religious reasons for up to 15 days after birth in order to allow for the naming of the child, has unanimously passed the Assembly this afternoon.

The bill was sponsored by Senator Singer on the Senate side.

According to New Jersey State law, after childbirth, a parent has up to five days to name a child and submit the birth certificate. This becomes problematic when a boy is born, and parents wait until the Bris to give the child’s name.

Under this bill, an accommodation will be given for religious purposes, and allow up to 15 days to submit the birth certificate.

“We thank Assemblymen Kean and Rible for their sponsorship of this bill providing religious accommodations for parents filing their birth certificate,” Agudah New Jersey’s Director Rabbi Avi Schnall said. “Their sensitivity to the needs of the community is evident in this bill, as it has been throughout their career.”

The bill no heads to the Governor’s desk.
