BREAKING VIDEO & PHOTOS: Lakewood High School students take to the streets in protest over teacher job cuts

Hundreds of students from the Lakewood High School this afternoon took to the streets to protest the recent job cuts to approximately 140 staff members – including teachers.

Some holding signs, the students peacefully marched from the Lakewood High School building around 12:15 PM, chanting along the way.

The students made their way to the football field on Ridge Avenue, and then back around to the school. The entire protest lasted about 45 minutes.

As earlier reported, the District is waiting to hear a response from the State regarding a letter requesting a $10,000,000 loan to help the District emerge from an approximately $15,000,000 deficit.

  1. As a former student at Lakewood High School I apprecaite their pain .

BUT — of course — nothing the Board could do .

the STATE – not the Township — must come to the rescue .

  2. Loan? We don’t need a loan.. we need an INCLUSIVE PLAN where the state recognizes the non-public school kids and funds Lakewood according to the real needs.

We have been taken advantage of by the state not recognizing our kids for decades.

Time to get a serious effort underway to fight for our rights.

  3. Before everyone starts saying this is a waste because the board can’t do anything, protests bring attention to problems.
If you make a big enough noise bigger media outlets start picking up the story. All the sudden higher ups start having to answer questions. They don’t like to answer questions, so they will quietly tell state officials to take care of the problem, and they will quickly find a bandaid solution.
But there is not doubt the more attention this gets from the media the quicker something will get done.
This walkout is a great way to get exposure.

  4. These kids are passionate about their education. They want their education. No one was disrespectful but calming protesting their views. Please listen to them. Let no child be left behind. Those of us on the front line witness their cries on a daily basis. Please support them.

  5. This needs to be done in a bigger way. Like downtown and in Trenton. Politicians hate when things like this get into the news.

  6. We need to all protest together. All Lakewood residents have been taken advantage of by the State.

The local taxpayers have been bailing out the state long enough, and the education is being cut beyond reason.

They take our tax dollars, but ignore our children. We need to all go down to Trenton and protest together.

This should have been done 5 years ago.

  7. We are doing this for a reason! We are helping each other as a community! We know there’s a way to solve this!! We can’t be let down this easy! We want to keep our teachers, who actually care about their jobs and student. Also, us as students need to have our after school activities who wish to never be taken away.

  8. Proud of these students showing pride. As former alumni i feel for these students. I remember back in my senior year there was a walk out to . Its because Lakewood is a family and the teachers care about there students. Continue to stand up and support lakewood highschool education. Best teachers and coaches out there. P.M.A

  9. Strangely,no one is mentioning, aside from the State shortchanging us because of their nutty formula, our BOE has a tremendous expense that they must hire bi-lingual teachers due to an even nuttier law that Hispanic kids in an American Public School need to be taught in Spanish !! Which is part of the No-Child-Left-Behind federal law. Truthfully, the FED should bail us out. And the kids should March on Washington. Amigos: ju necessita take a bus and go marcho La Washington, with Mucho personas, and rapido! Gracias. Sadly,my keyboard doesn’t have an upside-down exclamation point !!
