Lakewood resident petitions Gov. Murphy to raise GSP speed limit

A Lakewood resident has created a petition to raise the speed limit on the Garden State Parkway, as well as other highways.

“By changing the speed limit on the Garden State Parkway and other NJ highways, people will agree to travel further for a job, which will lower unemployment rates,” the petition reads.

The petition asks the Governor to raise the limit to 75 MPH.

  1. a higher speed limit would also cause more (early) deaths which would
potentially save the state tens of thousands in monthly social security payouts, and lessen the amount of people who would need unemployment (since they would be dead)

  2. Who goes 65 mph on the parkway?
I travel on the parkway every day, if it’s possible most people go between 75 and 80 mph, and if there is traffic, what’s it going to help to raise the speed limit?

  3. I don’t think it’s safe to have the speed limit at 75
    1) everyone will be going at least 85 and I don’t think it’s safe
    2) there will be more accidents

  4. Hmmm…I’m not taking that job, too far. Oh wait! I can go 75 instead of 65 and get there 5 min faster, ok I’ll take it. Wasn’t I always driving 75 anyway?!? Ah so now I can go 85! That will get me there 7 min faster. 8:30am GSP, I should have realized that all these other people must’ve just taken jobs that require going on the GSP now that the speed limit changed.

  5. I think “Lakewood Resident” had a very fair point.

Lots of states have a speed limit of 75.

A speed limit of 65 and 75 has nothing to do with early deaths.

Early deaths are caused by not responsible drivers, who would cause acsidents regardless of the speed limit, early deaths are most probably caused by texting while driving, regardless of the driver is going 50 or 75.

This is actualy a great petition

I am for the 75 speed limit.

    Howe

  6. NO CHANGE NECESSARY! You will not be ticketed for driving 75-80 (at least I haven’t and I’ve done it right in front of troopers numerous times) so what are you trying to accomplish? 85-90 is too fast, if you can’t get to work fast enough get a helicopter. Of all things you can advocate for this is what you’re concerned about?

  7. Nice idea, however since our new governor will most probably legelize Marijuana, then maybe it’s a better idea to keep the speed limit at 65……or lower it to 50

To afraid what the driving would be like once it’s legal in “Towns” across New Jersey….

  8. Who is this Lakewood resisent? I hope not someone i know, pikuach Nefesh, the roads we’re engineered for 55- 65 not higher. No lets petition to keep it safe. Maybe petition to fix Lakewood roads.

  9. I don’t think that’s the best idea. Not everyone on the GSP has vehicle’s that can keep up to those speeds. I’ve heard that people can get tickets for going too slow, I’m not sure how true that is but it’s a thought if car’s are older yet still safe to drive. And we have younger drivers and senior citizens on the GSP everyday who may not feel comfortable driving at those high-speeds. By high speeds I mean the 10-20 over the speed limit that people already do. So, can you imagine Grandma pushing petal to the metal doing 95 mph in beach traffic? LoL. Also, if you’re worried about the marijuana smokers on the road, they usually do things in slow motion from what I hear. Drive safely! 🙂

  10. What’s da big deal for a Lakewood resident to start such a petition? After all, lotsa folk drive 75 mph right here on our very own Williams Street and other roads.

  11. I just go with the flow. If everyone’s doing 75-80, I go right along with them, and if everyone is going slower, I stay with the pack. High speeds don’t cause accidents, carelessness does. I don’t know if anyone actually drives only 65 mph. If they do they’d be left in the dust.

  12. I think the roads with 70-75 mph are very straight roads such as the 80. The GSP has curves and in many places it is banked at an angle. Since drivers almost always drive much faster than the speed limit, and as noted above, the police don’t ticket them, it would be prudent to keep the speed limit at 65.

  13. Lower speed limits were always advocated by left wing liberals as a means of achieving better fuel economy and reducing greenhouse emissions. Don’t waste your time petitioning the current administration….
