The Lakewood Board of Education moments ago approved the district superintendent’s request to place metal detectors at all elementary schools in Lakewood, due to yesterday‘s incident with the gun.
The Superintendent’s request was first reported by TLS last night.
The announcement came this morning during an emergency meeting held at the Lakewood High School.

And not the high school? We have to first wait to see if his possible older sibling has a gun?
Who is the gun owner? Is there suppression of this story by the authorities for some reason??
The High and Middle school’s supposedly have them already.
Private schools as well???
Article states “All elementary schools”. Therefore I surmise they will be installed in private and public schools. And who do you think will pay for the detectors? The BOE is already in a $28 million deficit. ONE not-to-bright 10 year old brings a gun to school and the town immediately wants to spend $millions$$$ for metal detectors. How many schools total???
All is a miyut because they don’t have control over private schools.
The high schools already have them. Private schools can decide on theur own what to do
How are they going too pay for this? I thought the BOE was broke.
I disagree with this decision. This was a once-in-a-long-while occurence that kid brought a loaded gun to school. This is not a typical threat in elementary schools. To install metal detectors, and have them manned, in all public schools is absurd. Prepare for another eensy-weensy tax hike.
The kid brought it out on the BUS. How will having metal detectors at the SCHOOL help?
To command post, do you know what has more value than a tax hike? In case you don’t, the life of a child.
One time is too many!!!!!! Unfortunately it’s becoming too common in the USA that you hear public school kids bringing guns to school. It’s scary that it now happened in Lakewood as well. It is best to take immediate necessary actions to make sure it never happens again and that all are safe.
Metal detector won’t help. The kid will run through the detector, and do whatever damage he wants to do.
Yes. A child’s life. I feel so sad that we have come to this point; however, I will do everything at ANY cost to save any child. I watch these kids play outside after school. When I was a child, we never feared anything like this. We just played, as it should be. I pray for all of them. Makes me sad.
On a side note related to this story: Why is it always such a problem to pay for stuff around here?
Are there not enough government (tax payer) assistance programs?
Is there not enough new construction and growth?
Are not commercial establishments (clothes, food, home improvements, etc.) highly successful?
All the cornerstones of a prosperous community are running on all cylinders, baruch Hashem, yet there’s never enough money for any one thing.
Putting aside the issue of our bankrupt BOE paying for the metal detectors. We are clearly doing something very wrong if this is where are elementary school children are holding. I think we should be discussing morals, more than metal detectors.
