Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Spruce/Washington area

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Hi Mr. Mayor, I live in the Spruce St area and the morning traffic out of the area is a nightmare. If you come around 9:30, you will see traffic on Spruce St backed up just to make a left onto Washington Ave, which itself is completely backed up with people waiting to turn onto Pine. Just getting to Pine St can take more than 10 minutes.

Much of the Washington Ave traffic is due to the fact that it is difficult to make a left from Washington onto Pine, though it is fairly easy to make a right from Washington onto Pine.

The majority of cars are making a right onto Pine, but get stuck behind the few cars making a left onto Pine.

There are two simple solutions to fix this: One, for the last 100 feet on Washington before Pine, paint two lanes for cars headed to Pine, one with a left turn stripe and the other with a right turn stripe. Two, alternatively, make a small exiting road and merge for those turning right onto Pine, in place of the sidewalk and grass which is currently there.

Are these possible? It would save residents so much time and aggravation.

Thank you!

Response from Mayor Coles:

Hi Meir

We are looking at a couple of options for this intersection.

The first would be to re-route the end of Washington to where it would meet up with where Vine Street would continue. We are waiting on the state to give us permission to put Vine through. The new intersection would be wide enough to accommodate a left center & right turn lane. We were hoping to have permission already, but the state is taking its time.

If we are not allowed to put Vine through, we will widen the end of Washington to allow for the turning lanes and possible light. In the meantime I will ask engineering if we have enough room there now to designate the lanes as you suggest.

Thanks

Ray

  1. Getting rid of the one way sign into Pine River Village would also help. It’s clearly not a legal sign because there’s no one way sign at the other end of the road. It can’t only be one way at one side and not the other(where does it become a 2 way?)
