‘Rich Returns’ – Lakewood resident Peretz (‘Rich’) Eichler among finalists in Israel video contest

The Yom Kippur War and its personal impact inspire a young New York television producer to explore his Jewish heritage while in Israel. Years later, it acts as the inspiration for his brother and other family members with truly rich returns.

What could a fascinating story of the search for a lost pair of tefillin in America – phylacteries – have to do with the State of Israel?

Well, the story goes back to 1973. The Arabs caught Israel with very few soldiers on the border. Egypt and Syria attacked from the north and south. Israeli intelligence was completely wrong. They predicted that war would not break out for years. The Arabs – they said – were scared of the Israeli Army. The defeat in the Six Day War was so definite that the Israeli intelligence was overconfident. On the Jewish people’s holiest day of the year, Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the Arabs attacked. Israel mobilized everyone – immediately.

Following a few weeks of horrible battles, Israel was on the western side of the Suez canal in the Sinai. In the North, they reached a few miles from Damascus. This young man from the United States volunteered to go cheer up some of the young Israeli soldiers and bring them some goodies. He was shocked to his core when he saw some horrendous sites. It drove him to do something meaningful with his life.

His path led him to a Yeshiva in Jerusalem and his life changed in a way that would lead to rich returns.

But whatever happened to his tefillin? Watch and find out.
