Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responds to your ‘Ask The Mayor’ questions: Clifton Avenue

The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].

Question:

Dear honorable mayor:

I drive every day to work through Clifton ave. Since they installed the new traffic light which was well needed I’m seeing an increase in the traffic, and I realized that the traffic light on first street is not coordinated. Meaning, when the light on first and Clifton is green, the light on main street and Clifton is red, and this is causing heavy traffic backed up far back. If you can please take a look into it to have the lights coordinated it will be a big help for my daily commute and for all Lakewood residents traveling.

I really appreciate you taking the community’s concerns seriously, and always looking to make it better for all us residents thanks in advance.

Sincerely, a Lakewood resident.

Response from Mayor Coles:

Thanks. I have asked our engineering department to correct the timing of these lights.

Ray

  1. we were all stunned when this light went up. Why give the keys to our town to a traffic study company that also installs the lights themselves. Traffic light on Forest and 7th also proven non-successful as most pedestrians are still attempting to cross Forest even when Forest has Green.
Let’s get rid of the left turning lane from Route 9 onto Hurley( where it”s typically just one 18 Wheeler getting stuck anyway) and add an additional lane for going straight. Thank you Mr. Mayor,we appreciate this forum here on The Scoop

  2. Why wasn’t the light coordinated when it was installed? Why do we need a letter to the Lakewood scoop to get this town to function normally? Many letters aren’t even printed because there’s just so much the Mayor can do.
I honestly feel like I’m living in Chelm as far as the township goes.

  3. Why are the companies that the Township hires to install these lights allowed to walk off without configurating and syncing the lights? The lights are kinda worthless without proper coordination. Are they hired to just erect the light hardware and not program the system? Then who is in charge of this aspect? I suggest the township appoint someone to check up after all contracted work to make sure the job is fully completed. ( the outside company doesn’t care, they don’t live here after all).MAybe the Inspections Department can help with this. If this light was never properly configured, then chances are that the other 4 weren’t either. Let’s get them all checked, please .TY. (It’s also important to bear in mind that checking them out during off-peak hours or during a holiday will not give an accurate picture of the actual traffic flow)

  4. I know this is a county road, but could ask the county to coordinate the lights on New Hampshire Ave at America Ave and at Swarthmore Ave. The light at America Ave should only be red when the light on Swarthmore is red.

  5. unfortunately I have found very often the ones calling the shots and playing with our traffic ,don’t live or even drive our streets, and don’t understand the needs and times of traffic! each are should have few intelligent people that are very familiar with the traffic and driving patterns of the area and they should represent the area as to what needs to be done to alleviate the traffic. Sometimes all it is striping turning lanes etc…
