Daydreams in the Carpool Lane

[COMMUNICATED] By: L. Halevi  This past Sunday afternoon, as I sat in the carpool  pick-up lane at my son’s school, I started looking at all the vehicles lined up in front of me and behind me.  There were  quite a number of mini vans – Siennas, Odysseys, Caravans, Sedonas, just to name a few – and  a nice mixture of all types of cars of various models, ages, conditions, all stuck in the same line at  the same school waiting for their respective children to be dismissed.

As I daydreamed patiently, my mind wandered to thinking about the occupants of all these vehicles.  Who were they? What is their story? What’s going on in their lives? Does the choice of vehicle they drive hint at their financial status?

According to Tomchei Shabbos, the organization that provides for the needs of thousands of families in our midst, the recipients come in all shapes and sizes and it is all but impossible to actually tell who is a Tomchei Shabbos recipient and who is not.

As I sit in the carpool lane, I am just a few cars away from a Tomchei Shabbos recipient, or maybe even more than one. I don’t know which one it is – and I will never know, due to the extreme measures Tomchei Shabbos has in place to ensure discretion in all their work  – but it hits me that  Tomchei Shabbos helps everyone in need, regardless of what the outside looks like.

Furthermore, it hits me that by supporting Tomchei Shabbos, I am supporting a fellow parent in my child’s school. I am supporting my child’s friend. I am supporting a family that is no different than my own.

Wherever we go, we are just a stone’s throw away from a Tomchei Shabbos recipient. If that’s not a good enough reason to support Tomchei Shabbos, I don’t know what is.

The Annual dinner of Tomchei Shabbos is approaching and participation in the dinner is statement that you recognize the importance of their mission and declare your support for that mission; a mission of providing over $4 Million in relief to our fellow Lakewood, Jackson and Toms River residents.

When your friend needs Tomchei Shabbos they are there. When Tomchei Shabbos makes a dinner, you should be there too!

No matter what kind of vehicle you drive, your destination on Motzei Shabbos Parshas  Mishpatim, February 2, 2019,  should be the Tomchei Shabbos dinner!
