Longtime Lakewood crossing guard struck by ambulance thanks community

Andrew Howard, the longtime Lakewood crossing guard who was struck by an out-of-control ambulance in Lakewood yesterday, is thanking the community for all their support.

“Thank you all for your prayers and concern,” Howard wrote to TLS. “Thank you to all the first responders and the Lakewood Police Department for everything today…and the text messages – it’s wonderful the outpouring of concern.”

Howard suffered a leg injury and will need time to recover.

He jokingly added, “Get word to Ben from the community no coffee for a while my friend.????”

  6. Have a speedy recovery!
You do your job so efficiently and professionally; the corner of Oak and 9 is just not the same without you there. Rain or shine, cold or warm you are there keeping us safe and helping us get to where we need to be. Sadly, it needed to come to this for us to show our appreciation to you as we have no time to do it while you’re on the job.

    • Thank You Howard for helping the traffic control! Im sorry you got hurt, i hope you feel better quick!
anyone in your position that needs to walk on the side of the road ex: predestrian, is in a dangerous place. your work is great but dangerous, can we put up a ‘smart’ traffic light there instead? this is an innovative idea but maybe we can put up a light with a live camera feed and ability to change the light remotely on a whim ex; like when you see cars on oak waiting to turn. this way you can still direct the traffic virtually without being in a dangerous postion!!

  7. Thank you TLS for the chance to express my long overdue thanks to Andrew! Andrew, I blessed you every morning and every afternoon as I did carpool and crossed that busy intersection, and now I’m praying for your speedy recovery! I sincerely hope you’re back on your feet in no time. Your service to the community was invaluable, and your presence is sorely missed. Best wishes!
