Bill to Prevent Improper Use of ‘Nurse’ Title Clears Assembly Panel

Legislation to prohibit a person to use a “nurse” title unless they are licensed as a professional, practical or advanced practice nurse was approved Monday by the Assembly Regulated Professions Committee. The bill was sponsored by Assemblyman Nick Chiaravalloti (D-Hudson).

Chiaravalloti released the following statement:

“Under current law, it’s a crime for a person without a nursing license to present themselves a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse, or use the R.N. or L.P.N. abbreviation. However, there are no laws against using the title “nurse” without a license.

“This bill would correct that, and impose a $200 to $500 fine for violations upon conviction. Out of respect for the hardworking, dedicated professional nurses across New Jersey, they should be the only ones allowed to use the title they’ve more than earned.”

Fine someone because of some other people’s ego? Freedom of speech?

Stupid? i think not. Many parents assume that the baby nurse is a professional nurse with the education that goes with it when in fact it is often a foreigner with no prior experience. This is a way to ensure that only a true professional can use the title Nurse. No different than using the title doctor for one who has earned a doctorate degree.

Cant pretend to be a cop… cant sell candy covered chocolates and call them M&Ms when they are not…cant pass yourself as a nurse when your not. Makes perfect sense to me.

  • Stupidity says:

Did you read the bill. It says “out of respect for the …” Comprehension? Maybe?

  • Chacham says:

Wow! So mothers will have to stop nursing their kids? All nurseries will have to be renamed? Sorry to tell you, nurse is an old word that pre-dates the registered nurse, and it means “a person who is paid to take care of a young child, usually in the child’s own home”. So the baby nurse is the real definition of a nurse!
