PHOTOS: Lakewood Township celebrates Arbor Day

The Lakewood Township today celebrated Arbor Day with tree plantings sponsored by Lakewood Township and the Lakewood Shade Tree Commission, at Lake Carasaljo.

At the ceremony, with help from the Lakewood Public Works Department, officials planted three Snow Fountain Weeping Cherry Trees (Botanical Name: Prunus Snofozam Snow Fountains). These ornamental cherry trees traditional grow to be eight to 15 feet tall and have a canopy that spread six to eight feet wide.

Arbor Day, first celebrated in 1872 in the United States, encourages individuals and groups to plant trees because of their environmental importance. Lakewood has been awarded “Tree City USA” for the past 36 years for its outstanding urban forestry, having planted hundreds of trees over the years.

Shade Tree Commission members include Chairman Zev Stern, Vice Chairman Craig Theibault, Tzvi Gordon, Raphael Miller, Moshe Raitzik, and Mary Kay Malec, secretary. The alternate Shade Tree Commission members are Akiva Silverstein and Abraham Neuhaus.

  1. This is great yet how many trees were destroyed lets say in the past 3 months alone for the crazy development around town? If trees were so important we would try to preserve the ones we already have. 3 trees are nothing compare to the hundreds ripped out of the ground on a weekly bases. Just saying.

  2. This is in my opinion the most important commission in the township nothing more important than educating the youth regarding importance of our trees let’s plant more !!!!

  3. I’m really understanding why tree’s were only planted by the Lake.We definitely need Shade Trees now throughout the town..
We don’t have very many trees left. I’m just saying.

  4. I am extremely disappointed with the constant deforestation of our town…it takes away the oxygen that trees provide for us to breathe…and the extreme increase in traffic congestion is making it impossible to move around town and increase pollution…shame on our elected officials
