Governor Murphy Reacts to Lakewood Funding Cuts: Withdrawing much-needed support is not the answer to the challenges present in Lakewood

After Lakewood’s School District filed an emergency motion in court to block the slashing of $30 million in aid to Lakewood schools, transportation and education programs, Governor Murphy’s office told TLS that Assembly Democrats’ plan to cut out the funding was wrong.

“Lakewood is one of New Jersey’s fastest-growing communities, with a significant portion of that growth coming from the growing Jewish community,” Murphy’s press secretary told TLS. “The Governor and the Department of Education have been committed to working with all communities to provide all districts with the funding necessary to meet the needs of their students. The Administration believes that in Lakewood we must maintain the funding as proposed to stabilize the district, ensure there is no interruption to the educational services provided to students with special needs, and that children are safely transported to school. The Governor remains committed to working with the Legislature to address the needs of our school districts but simply withdrawing much-needed support is not the answer to the challenges present in Lakewood.”

The budget proposed by Governor Murphy included the $30 million in aid to Lakewood’s school district. Assembly Democrats snubbed the governor by passing their own budget which, besides for the funding cut to Lakewood, also does not include a millionaire’s tax which Murphy has been pushing Democratic lawmakers to pass.

  1. Dearest Governor

What would the state do if all of us in Lakewood would enroll to the ps system for Sept? where would you place over 50000 new students ??

We contribute so much taxes & we are not getting back what every other nj resident is getting

    Please reconsider !!!

  2. Dearest Donna:

Your community receives almost $16 million per year from the State of New Jersey for the busing of your children to private schools. Therefore, you are incorrect in stating that you are not “getting anything back” in exchange for your tax payments.

In addition, we welcome the enrollment of your children in our public schools, where, although they cannot receive any instruction in religious education, they will have a full day of instruction in other subject matters.

    Thank you, Phil Murphy
