In a new twist this morning to the tragic story, TLS has learned that Harav Dovid Feinstein Shlita has issued a Psak regarding the Rebbi who went missing at sea after saving a student.
Despite a Psak yesterday from a Rav that the family should sit Shiva if he isn’t found by today, a representative on behalf of the family and Rabbonim involved brought the complex Shaila to Harav Dovid Feinstein.
Harav Feinstein Shlita Paskened that the family should not sit Shiva unless a body is found.
Rabbi Bauman jumped into the water to save a student, when he himself was swept into the ocean.
TLS continues to be in touch with Rabbonim involved in this tragic matter.
(A fund overseen by Rabbonim has been set up to help the family.)
@TLS – what is your source? no other news site is reporting about sheilas asked to rabonim about sitting shiva. Seems like gossip to me.
Actually their information in this post is correct. As I’ve heard directly from the family.
A little more sensitivity in reporting this would be appreciated. Not BREAKING NEWS-NEW TWIST! We are dealing with a very sad and mournful situation. Please try to be more sensitive in your reporting.
I was actually very surprised by the original Psak. It is a shailah that should only be dealt with by a Gedolai Haposkim, as it is directly entangled with Hilchos Agunah.
Around 40 years ago there was a shaila about siamese twins in Eretz Yisroel. They went to Rav Elyashiv ZT”L to ask him and he said that there are certain questions that only the Posek Hador Rav Moshe could answer and this is one of those questions.
Another Machlokes Achronim.
Ailu Vailu.
This gives the young rabbis to be some more insight into this shayleh
Does anyone in Lakewood want to go to hand out flyers
All are advised that anytime a psak is issued without the name of the posek it is unreliable.
Hgaon Reb Feivel Cohen shlita told me personally that anytime he renders psak he allows his name to be used as he is responsible for his psak.
@Unnamed Daas Torah
What you are saying is true when there is public psak but this wasn’t a public psak that they needed to reveal who the posek was. How could it be unreliable if they asked?
Rabosi, instead of arguing who gave a psak and why spend your time better by saying Tehillim for the rabbi to be found and his family overcoming the challenge… they will need a lot of support now…leave the halachic sheilos to somebody who actually knows…DAVEN ..
Who one poses a halachic question to is crucial in getting the right psak.
TO DAVEN DAVEN DAVEN IS ALL OUR BUSINESS AND OBLIGATION.
TO WEAR KOSHER SHTEILS ONCE IN FOR ALL AS A ZECHES IS OUR BUSINESS AND OBLIGATION
Thank you
I, too, was puzzled at the 1st peak. This is classic “Mayim she’ain Luhem soif” — but who am I to argue ? And we can still daven !!

Psak is for gedolim but we can actually help
To all the know it alls out there.
I just came back from there after being out on the water for 2 days straight searching for the body. While doing so we were getting updates from representatives of the family, and there was a halachic ruling that the family should sit Shiva in the event the body wasn’t found by Thursday. This was after we finished Mincha on Wednesday after a very hot and tough day on the water.
However, that did change by Thursday morning as Rav Dovid Feinstein issued his Psak.
But, my suggestion is that instead of all of us being a maven, how about heading out there and assisting???
Contrary to many unauthorized reports and sources they can use EVERY additional set of eyes, hands and feet out there.
May we hear only besuros tovos.
Gut shabbos
Use the Segulah used to find Horowitz body missing after Lake Kisipping drowning. Hopefully it works here too along with bonus of eliminating shiva question.
