Letter: Dear pool owner

Dear Pool Owner, I am a lifeguard instructor, water safety instructor and am familiar with pool management.

In conversation with a woman, she related to me that she moved into a house with a pool. She said that she herself doesnt know how to swim and therefore she wants her children to learn how to swim.

I would think this is common sense but would like to bring to public awareness that it is a serious safety concern to own a pool and not know how to swim and get to the bottom of the pool. I feel it is negligent to have a pool without knowing how to rescue someone.

It’s a pool owner and also a parental responsibility to learn basic life saving skills.

Please be mindful.

Wishing you a safe and happy summer!

  1. Thank you for the awareness.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has a website called HealthyChildren.org.

They have several articles on water safety which is the leading cause of accidental death by children 1-4 yr old R”L.
You could find advice on when and how to start swimming lessons for children as young as 1 yr old.

Maybe an organisation such as Chesed Of Lakewood can make these lessons more popular?

  2. Pool Address Signs safe precious seconds in an emergency. Responsible thing to do if you own a pool. They can be obtained via Chesed of Lakewood

  3. isnt it a halacha that it is a father’s responsibility to teach his child to swim as wellas a skill to be able to support his family?

  4. Please be aware while it is a good idea to start swimming lessons a young age, especially in a household with a pool, it is not enough. The pool must be gated and secured and children must be watched vigilantly. A puddle jumper is also not good enough.

With H-shems help we should all finish off the summer safely and happily!

  5. @jaxonite, Thank you for your comment.
    That is a great suggestion.
However, this letter was intended to bring awareness of the importance of pool owners and parents obligation to know how to swim and learn life saving skills. EVEN IF THE CHILDREN KNOW HOW TO SWIM.

  6. Any one who owns a pool. Please be aware that there is a device that detects if there’s heavy weight in the pool such as a child drowning rl”
Every pool owner should have this device to avoid tragedies.
