BREAKING: Firefighters battling blaze at apartment complex in Lakewood; 3, including mother and child, airlifted to hospital [VIDEOS – UPDATED]

Dozens of firefighters are battling a second alarm structure fire in Lakewood.

The blaze broke out around 1:00 AM at the High Point complex on Prospect Street.

UPDATE: Multiple apartments were destroyed, leaving families displaced. Red Cross is being called in.

BREAKING UPDATE: 2:15 AM: Three choppers were requested for burn patients.

UPDATE: 4:30 AM: The Fire has been extinguished, and officials are now beginning to investigate the cause of the fire.

Approximately 10 apartments were damaged by the fire, some severely. Approximately 30 people were displaced.

Emergency Services Liaison Meir Lichtenstien tells TLS five police officers were hospitalized for smoke inhalation, but were already released (see video below).

Red Cross is assisting in placement for those affected.

BREAKING UPDATE: 8:30 AM: Sources tell TLS the fire reportedly started when a possibly-intoxicated person fell asleep with a lit cigarette in the room.

In addition, TLS has learned that more apartments may need to be evacuated this morning due to damage.

BREAKING UPDATE: Sources tell TLS the child burn victim was apparently thrown from the window by his mother in order to save him. They were both hospitalized.

UPDATE 8:30 AM: Board of Education Attorney Michael Inzelbuch responded to the scene to help out the children who attend the Lakewood School District, and to coordinate efforts to provide for their families who lost their belongings.
