NJAW To Make Major Upgrades In Lakewood

Lakewood will finally be receiving some major upgrades to its water infrastructure. New Jersey American Water said it will be replacing some 1,150 of water main in the areas of Congress Street off of Route 88 and Manetta Place off of the 9.

The project, beginning this coming week and expected to last through the month of October, will see the replacing of the water mains installed in the 1940’s with new and larger pipes which will increase water flows for Lakewood homes. The work in Lakewood comes with a price tag of $320,000, and is part of a larger initiative by NJAW to upgrade the water infrastructure in numerous towns across New Jersey.

Work is expected to take place from 7 AM to 6 PM throughout the upgrade, with traffic in the area of the work likely being adversely affected.

who decided about this project? were the locals asked? is there any issue with the water (besides smelling like bleach)? or is this all controlled by the developers, so they wont be able to be denied do to lack of water infrastructure??

  • Lakewood mom says:

Will this be an iorovement for all of lakewood, or just that area?

  • Justsayin.... says:

There must be a major construction project in the future that the water company is preparing for.
You think the upgrade will be a traffic nightmare wait until new housing comes in.

  • OverCharged says:

Will our prices be gong up again? They major overcharge on our water bills. My neighbors and I all pay close to 3 times what people with other water companies pay.

  • Pure water says:

This is likely due to lead. All those older pipes have lead in them, and the water company does not want to have any issues.
Unfortunately the problem isnt just in Flint and Newark, this problem is in places that have older pipes that have not yet been replaced with poly.

On behalf of New Jersey American Water, I wanted to clarify that this project is to replace aging water mains that have reached the end of their useful life. The old mains are not lead. This is part of our ongoing commitment to replace aging pipes to prevent leaks and breaks, and to ensure the continued reliable delivery of high-quality water to our customers in Lakewood and in service areas throughout the state. Specifically in Lakewood, we have invested about $35 million in the last two years on water and sewer main replacement, well and pump station upgrades and treatment facility upgrades. The cost of these investments is included in the rates you pay for water and sewer service.
