  1. Many of these units are owned by individuals, many of these individuals are not wealthy, and took a second mortgage on their home to purchase an investment property.

    The laws need to be followed, but trying to vilify “landlords” does not help anyone. Many of these landlords maybe facing financial ruin. Even if they have insurance to cover the damage, they still need to pay the mortgage, taxes, and association fees while the unit is empty, and it can take years to repair.

    There are no winners in this situation, it is a tragedy, most of all for those injured, but it affected many in their own way, including the landlords.
