In an effort to advance the education of Lakewood public school children, the Lakewood Board of Education announced that the trailers at Oak Street School will be dismantled as of December 2, 2019.
“The move is a result, in part, of a legal review of facilities compliance initiated at the Board’s and Superintendent request,” said General Counsel Michael Inzelbuch. “Public kids have a right to a stellar education in a classroom – not a makeshift learning environment. How this existed for approximately 20 years is…no words,” he said.
All students will be placed within school buildings either at Clarke or Clifton Elementary schools with their classmates and staff.
“It should be noted that there will be no construction expenses involved in this necessary move,” Inzelbuch said.
Those trailers were reviewed by the County Superintendent’s Office at the request of the State Monitor in 2016 and with many ordered out of service and others cited for significant code violations and closed pending repairs. The State Monitors questioned and stayed rental payments to Catapult as early as 2014. By law these should have been inspected annually by the County Office.
