Assembly Judiciary Committee Releases Bill To Give Driver’s Licenses To Illegal Immigrants

Assembly bill A4743 that would extend access to the standard driver’s license and create a REAL ID license for illegal residents, cleared the Assembly Judiciary committee with a 4-2 vote. The bill was sponsored by Assembly Judiciary Chairwoman Annette Quijano, Assemblyman Mukerji, Assemblywoman Huttle, Assemblyman Shaer, Assemblyman Johnson, and Assemblyman Danielsen.

Advocates, impacted residents, and elected officials submitted testimony in support at today’s committee hearing. Overwhelmingly, 42 written testimony in favor of the bill were submitted to the committee in support with 2 written testimonies opposing.

Farrin Anello, Senior Staff Attorney said, “ACLU-NJ supports this bill based upon core principles of equality, privacy, and transparency. Our state should treat all New Jerseyans fairly, so everyone can live their lives, care for their children, and contribute to their communities.”

Cristian Moreno-Rodriguez, who testified before the committee and is a member of the Hispanic Association of Atlantic County said, “Growing up my mom worked as a housekeeper, and every day she walked and took the bus to work for lack of access to a license, whether 30 degrees outside in the freezing winter or during a torrential thunderstorm. It eventually occurred to me that her 2-hour bus ride in South Jersey is only a 20-minute car ride. I realized my parents gave up their dignity, risked everything so that we could have a real future. I speak for my father and my mother, and I thank this committee for approving legislation A4743, so people like my parents can live with dignity, and raise their families without fear ”

Senator Michael Testa however criticized members of Assembly Judiciary Committee.

“Democrats in the General Assembly are wasting their precious time and State resources to prioritize the needs of illegal immigrants, while legal residents are struggling every day to stay in the Garden State,” said Testa (R-1). “Will illegals have to jump through hoops to show their ‘6 points of ID’ at the MVC like the rest of us? Democrats need to get their priorities straight. We need to get to work on fixing real issues, like lowering our state’s sky-high property taxes to make New Jersey more affordable for hardworking families.”

Testa slammed the approval of A-4743, which would create a second tier of driver’s licenses for those who are unable to prove lawful presence in the United States.

“Handing out drivers licenses to those who crossed our border or overstayed their visa is a slap in the face to all who immigrated legally to the United States,” added Testa. “We need to stop rewarding those who broke the law, and start taking fiscally prudent measures to make sure our children and their grandparents can afford to stay in New Jersey.”

  1. Are we talking about illegal immigrants getting licenses????

This article is so convoluted (done on purpose to fool the reader.

Anytime you see an article hiding main facts you know they are up to NO GOOD…

It’s not about licenses, it’s all about their illegal VOTES!

  2. Just because you have a Drivers license doesn’t mean you have legal registration and insurance.
How does the 6 points system work with undocumented people?
    Who are they? REALLY??!!
My insurance will end up going up!

    • Excellent question about the 6 points of identification. My wife can’t even use her birth certificate to prove who she is for her 6 points, as she was born in Jersey City before 1965 (when the hall of records burned down).

  3. A whole article without a single word about the fact that this law let’s illegal aliens get licenses. This is how the media becomes propagandists by hiding the truth and making believe it’s aabout equality when it’s really about rewarding people for breaking our laws.
