TLS spoke with Lakewood PD Chief Gregory Meyer today to discuss yesterday’s Jersey City shooting and its aftermath. Chief Meyer expressed his sadness upon hearing of the passing of Detective Seals of the Jersey City Police Department and offered his deepest condolences to Detective Seals’ family, children, and members of the JCPD. The loss of Detective Seals is like losing a brother and family member, Chief Meyer said. Chief Meyer also extended his condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the shooting attack.
In response to the shooting, the Lakewood Police Department has added extra patrols, marked and unmarked, to Lakewood streets, and has requested Ocean County Sherrif Michael Mastronardy to provide additional resources to Lakewood, which he has.
Chief Meyer said that there are currently no known threats to the Lakewood community, but if anyone sees something suspicious or out of place, they should immediately call 9-1-1 or the Lakewood Police Department at 732-363-0200. He said the concept of “See Something, Say Something” was demonstrated by Detective Seals who was investigating a truck believed to be involved in a separate crime when he was murdered.
Chief Meyer said that law enforcement is working to combat rising anti-Semitism through education, anti-bias laws, and providing law enforcement with the resources necessary to fight it.
If you or someone you know has been the victim of a bias crime, it should be reported immediately to the police. “By the victim coming forward, it may provide the key to solving one or a series of acts of hate,” said Chief Meyer.
