Menendez Calls for Gun Safety Reform in Wake of Fatal Jersey City Hate Crime: “Our hearts are broken and so are our gun laws” (VIDEO)

U.S. Senator Bob Menendez today joined a rally with Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action in calling on Congress to pass commonsense gun safety reform measures in the wake of the Jersey City shooting that took place last week, which left four individuals dead including a Jersey City officer. The deadly attack is being investigated as an act of domestic terrorism fueled by anti-Semitic and anti-law enforcement beliefs.

On Friday, Sen. Menendez joined an interfaith roundtable with Governor Phil Murphy and community leaders at Temple Beth El in the city.

“Our hearts are broken and so are our gun laws,” said Sen. Menendez. “As we mourn, we have to make a commitment that [the victims] lives will not have been in vein. It is time, as our gun laws are broken, to get them right. It is time for a universal background check to exist in our nation. Regardless of New Jersey having the strongest gun laws in the nation, it is of little value if you can purchase a gun at a gun show, from a private sale, or by the click of a mouse from anywhere in the nation that has much laxer laws and ultimately bring those guns to New Jersey.”

  1. Are you serious? What law exactly could have prevented this tragedy? The male involved was not legally allowed
We to possess a weapon and seemingly she would have passed the background check anyway.
And, perhaps if somebody in the street would have had a gun, this could have ended much sooner with less loss of life. It just amazed me that no matter what happens, Democrats blame it on gun laws. It’s a joke. All Democrats want to do is pick their agenda, and it doesn’t bother then to use a tragedy to get there.

The advantage of being a Democrat is that they stick together no matter what. The disadvantage is that you don’t get to actually think.

  2. He is correct. It’s the loose gun laws in neighboring Republican states that are enabling criminals easy access to guns in NJ.
We might agree with the republicans on 90% of issues but on gun control, they are DEAD wrong.
It’s a small sacrifice to give up the ability to use a high powered rifle & spare the lives of many from these mass killers.

  3. Shepsil,
    I respectfully disagree.
What would have stopped her from buying the guns in New Jersey? She would have passed all of the New Jersey safeguards, the strictest in the country.
If you take a moment and research the issue, you will see that most guns that are used in crimes are not purchased legally. The stricter gun laws, without a doubt have an effect on legal gun owners, not the criminals. Do you think for one second when Murphy lowered the magazine capacity in New Jersey that criminals actually got rid of the magazines that they had?
I am not saying that we shouldn’t do anything, but at the same time we need to take steps that will actually do something, not just create laws that do not work. This is proven time and time again.

  4. @ Shepdil. Gun control works in everyone but the criminals.
The ONLY way to stop a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a licensed firearm. Can’t have police around 24/7 everywhere.
Look at states with citizens that can carry legally, crime stats are MUCH lower than in restrictive states.

  5. Guns don’t work on magic, they work on science. You need to aim, properly pull the trigger and hold the gun correctly. This is very difficult when under pressure. New Jersey gives me the right to take 10 opportunities to defend my families life from an attacker without reloading.
My 9mm has 17rd magazines that came with the gun. No-ones been able to explain why I should have to replace my 17rd magazine with a 10rd one. Why is 10 chances ok even with the chance it may hurt innocent bystanders, but 17 opportunities is not ok?
I should have to watch my family be executed before my eyes when I could have had 7 more chances to save their lives?
(As for time to reach safety while a shooter reloads. If you watch videos, with very little practice reloading takes under 2 seconds, & closer to 1 second)
