New Poll Should Scare NJ Politicians l Aaron Neuman

A new poll conducted by GSI/FDU should be sending shivers of fear through politicians all across New Jersey. The poll of hundreds of residents of the state shows that 44% are planning to leave New Jersey in the near future, with 28% having plans to leave the state in the next 5 years.

Their reason?

The usual suspects – exorbitantly high property taxes and the crushing cost of living in the state. Other reasons for leaving include government corruption and concern about crime and drugs. The desire to leave most apparent in young people ages 18-29, of whom 40% plan to move elsewhere within the next 5 years.

“These results should alarm every elected official and policymaker in New Jersey,” said GSI’s president Regina M. Egea. “We have a crisis of confidence in the ability of our leaders to address property taxes and the cost of living. Whether at the start of their career, in prime earning years, or repositioning for retirement, New Jersey residents see greener pastures in other states. This crisis presents a profound challenge to our state as we are faced with a generation of young residents looking elsewhere to build their careers, establish families and make investments like homeownership.”

Property taxes and cost of living are issues that could be resolved by way of smarter government policies. However, New Jersey is chock full of politicians who try to gain votes by throwing money at special interest programs, which often contributes to the back-breaking financial costs of living in the state. Will New Jersey residents wake up and vote these politicians, casting votes instead for people who will ease the load placed on them? Only time will tell.

    • If you think this isn’t going to effect Lakewood, you deluding yourself. At the current rate of property tax growth, a house paying $15k in property tax now, will be paying $30k in 20 years. How many people in Lakewood can afford that? What about retirement, how many of the current residents in Lakewood are going to be able to pay their property taxes when retired?

  1. I have a favor to ask all those planning to leave, please vote Republican on your way out, some of us can’t quite leave with you.

    Thanking you in advance

  2. The legislature just doesn’t get it. All you have to know about NJ is that you cant pump your own gas. That should tell you everything you need to know about the ‘Nanny State’.

  3. I am in this exact situation. Year 2 of my 5 year plan to escape. The ever growing taxes, fees, fines for nonsense, and bureaucracy. I can easily move my business to a state with no income tax and live a much better life. When my last child is out of Yeshiva….it’s adios amigos..
