Important Notice to Owners of GE Shabbos Mode Ovens

The Star-K released the following alert this evening:

“It has come to our attention that GE mistakenly removed a critical piece of information from some STAR-K certified oven manuals. In the following GE, Hotpoint and Crosley models, Sabbath Mode does NOT control the light inside the oven. The light WILL turn on if you open the oven even when in Sabbath Mode.

Owners of these ovens should either leave the light on over the duration of Shabbos/Yom Tov or simply remove the light bulb ahead of time.”

The affected oven models are listed here.

Corrective action is being taken.

  1. I have 2 of the JGS760 and the light “does” stay off during shabbos mode. Please correct & verify the info before causing people to go wild for no reason at all.
    Thanks

  2. Ge sabbath mode has not controlled the light on many models for years. This is nothing new. Most shabbos observant people remove the bulb at leave the light in the oven on for shabbos

  3. I’m assuming if my GE oven is not new and there is no light that turns on unless I press the “light on “ button, I don’t need to do anything different for shabbos mode?

  4. This “press release” is very misleading. It seems to blame GE for leaving out critical information, but in reality it is Star_k who seems not to have done their job.
Isn’t it their responsibility to make sure Shabbo mode actually complies with Shabbos?????

  5. Please don’t miss the point that we live in a country where a national appliance company actually is willing to go to the lengths necessary to create an oven or refrigerator that is Sabbath compliant! Even if you claim that its good business sense, the efforts and constant upgrades they make is staggering. I have had a Sabbath compliant oven from the first experimental models, up to a three year old very advanced model. Very appreciative!

  6. The problem is not with the manufacturer but with the certifying agency.
Have you ever heard a kosher agency saty9a food is kosher if you just extract the treifus??
Sorry, they have the responsibility to do a better job
