Officer Matlosz: A Life Of Sacrifice | Meir Bergman

Nine years ago, Lakewood was rocked by the shocking and tragic death of Officer Chris Matlosz of the Lakewood Police Department. January 14th, 2011 is the day that one of our finest was shot and killed while keeping his community safe. Chris Matlosz was a giant among men, a kind yet bold protector of freedom and liberty and a man committed to the safety of those he served. On the day Chris was murdered by an evil and deranged individual, he was out conducting patrols, keeping neighborhoods safe. He went out on his shift that fateful day knowing full well of the dangers that are a part of his job.

Chris Matlosz was and remains an inspiration for the Lakewood community. The memory of his heinous murder should always be kept close in our memories. His heroic sacrifice should not be forgotten and become a note in a history book. His death has to serve as a daily reminder for us what he and his family sacrificed and what his brothers in blue sacrifice for us.

At the time of his death, Officer Matlosz was engaged to be married, with his wedding planned and just a few months away. I cannot begin to imagine the pain and grief his fiance felt that horrible day. I can barely fathom the anguish his family – siblings, uncles, and aunts – when he passed away. His sacrifice wasn’t just his own, it was a sacrifice made by everyone who loved and cared for him.

His colleagues, his brothers in blue, were scarred too by his loss. Not only did they lose a brother, but they also received a stark and terrifying reminder of the risks inherent in every one of their shifts. And that is a risk we should recognize and be aware of when interacting with these officers.

Officer Matlosz is a hero who should be remembered forever as the quintessential police officer and as a loving and wonderful human being who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of the people he protected.

The lessons he taught us should be ingrained and imprinted on our hearts and souls forever.

  1. A true hero who sacrificed everything to keep us all safe. Growing up as a child I once met him, he was the friendliest person. Showing all the children how his radio worked and just answering questions by curious children. A truly special police officer who will never be forgotten. God bless!

  2. Well said. Great Article. Missing one important point, though. Our hero also directly helped to remove evil from our neighborhood streets. Sav was tracked down, tried and convicted. and, hopefully, will not be heard from again for a very, very long time.

  3. Article is on the money. Truth be told, we need to all stop once in a while and appreciate our wonderful LPD who keeps us safe in this crazy world. Chris was a hero that day and made the ultimate sacrifice for the good of our town. @Shmully makes a good point. Sav, short for Savaga, was a bad, evil guy. And he’s off our streets thanx to Chris.
    You’re in our hearts, #317.
