Lakewood’s Oak Street School briefly placed on lockdown after report of student with gun

A report of a student with a gun prompted the lockdown of Lakewood’s Oak Street School this morning, TLS has learned.

Upon arrival to school, a young student told a staff member that another student had a gun, sources say.

Following protocol, the school was placed on lockdown and the student and his book-bag were searched – with negative results.

After approximately 10 minutes, the lockdown was lifted.

UPDATE: Police released the following statement:

At approximately 8am, Officers responded to the Oak Street School for a report of a student in possession of a weapon.

The school was locked down by the building administrator as a precautionary measure prior to police arrival.

When officers arrived on scene, they immediately identified the 8 year old student in question and determined that he was not armed. The responding officers also ruled out the presence of a weapon in the classroom and the bus that drove the student to school.

The school administrator is handing this incident internally and DCP&P was also notified.

We’d like to take this opportunity to applaud the school staff and students for their response to this incident as well as the many first responders that assisted: Lakewood EMS, Lakewood Fire Department, Patrol, Detectives, School Resource Officers and Strategic Response Unit.
