  1. Its shocking to me that people need the Mishna Brura to tell them what to do when there is a health emergency.
Where do you think the Mishna Brura get it from? From common sense. He didn’t a gemara to tell him. We should use our common sense and realize that when there is a health emergency, we need to follow all the guidelines set forth by the doctors and the government.

    • so what is it? it sounds like it means a mask dipped in camphor which is a chemical. either way it says that it should cover the nose and mouth

    • Common sense is our guide unless our gedolim tells us to do otherwise. That’s why you don’t wait until a rav tells you that you can eat before you eat breakfast.

  2. Camphor is from a tree. It is a microbiocidal. The kavanh of the biur halacha is not to fasten it around your nose and lips with a rubber band but to tie it with a cloth around your nose and mouth. This is a KAL shekain since camphor and menthol are germ killers and our masks are just filters and not microbiocidal. For sure a filter mask is needed. As far as common sense goes 1) a person with sechel can be mchaven to halacha as we find a gemora that a sevora is good like a proof. 2) Its sechel that since this magafa is not over and the rofe mumchim say to continue diligence of social distancing hand washing face masks to prevent a second wave or reinfection or previous non infection to follow what they say.

  3. Not to pasken but this is a din of pikuach nefesh even on shabbos. It says also to stay in and not go outside and if he needs to go outside to wear this wrapping around his face. Better to daven bychidus than go outside brabim and put yourself in danger. Pikuach nefesh is doraisa minyan.drabbanan. We had the same shaila here in Israel and everyone paskened daven inside

  4. Read the whole סעיף in שו”ע. It’s talking about a חולה eating on a taanis. The ביאור הלכה says that in times of choleria, in a place where choleria is not חזקה, one should eat less than a שיעור at a time. And if someone wants to fast in a place where the sickness is not rampant, that person should be warned not to leave his house the whole day, and if he does, then he must cover his face. It’s talking about someone who wants to fast during choleria (let’s not forget how dangerous fasting during choleria was, that R’ Yisroel Salanter made kiddush on Yom Kippur for the whole shul, so everyone should eat!)
Curious what was the question that was asked to R’ Chaim. (of course whatever he says is unquestionable, but was the question asked about places where the virus is no longer spreading at all, or specific to certain places)

  5. The point of fasting is a side question. That’s got nothing to do with wearing a protective mask going outside. That’s a different question. The biur halacha is talking about where it’s not rampant now but still around . In Israel its not rampant now but we are still required by law to wear one even if it stops completely there are warnings from the misrud habriut cdc and other countries about a second wave coming that’ll be even worse if people don’t continue with the same rules as if it was rampant. All epidemics have 2nd waves unless a vaccine or other antibody serums are available. And I don’t know if corona is any less dangerous than cholera. Cholera was misunderstood in the beginning as an airborne disease but was discovered to be from contamited water and food from sewage and unhygenic conditions. The treatment was simple by disinfecting water soap and water and avoiding contaminated food or feces. Corona is airborne and more contagious than cholera unless the food and water are safely treated but cholera has a higher mortality rate.

  6. I knew this for a long time from the Army. They would put polyglycol into the ventilation systems as an antimicrobial. Turns out that a newer study where Dr. Oswald Hope Robertson suspected that vaporized propylene glycol (the main ingredient in ecigs) could potentially kill the flu virus. He put his hypothesis to the test in a study at the University of Chicago’s Billings Hospital.where he discovered that in laboratory mice that were separated into two groups.

He placed each group in a separate chamber and then sprayed propylene glycol into one, followed by the flu virus. In the other chamber, he only exposed the mice directly to the flu virus. The mice that first inhaled propylene glycol first all survived, but the mice that only inhaled the flu virus all died.

“The propylene glycol itself was a potent germicide. One part of glycol in 2,000,000 parts of air would – within a few seconds – kill concentrations of air-suspended pneumococci, streptococci, and other bacteria numbering millions to the cubic foot,” he explained. have not

The FDA classifies PG as a food and drug additive that is “generally recognized as safe”. You can find it in numerous foods and pharmaceutical products, but only through electronic cigarette vapor is it inhaled as Dr. Robertson showed by using the vapor. Furthermore, menthol is also an antimicrobial and is used in many cold products.

I can say that I vape vegetable PG and organic tobacco and menthol, with very little nicotine and it’s cleared up a chronic sinus condition I’ve had for years. I never touch the fake flavored garbage and don’t trust their safety. I have sourced organic and pure ingredients with a reliable lab report and use a stainless steel heating coil that has no chemical emissions. So far so good.

  7. the Biur Halacha is talking about Tisha B’Av and that doesn’t fall out on Shabbos so he doesn’t discuss carrying it outside of the Eruv but Rav Chaim Kanievsky shlit”a did say to wear the mask now even on Shabbos without an Eruv and he wasn’t talking only about Eretz Yisroel.
