Police in NJ still enforcing the houses of worship gathering limits

Despite President Trump’s announcement on Friday declaring houses of worship essential, nothing has changed locally in New Jersey.

Police on Friday night and on Shabbos stopped by multiple houses of worship in Lakewood to ensure the limits were still being adhered to.

Also on Friday, Governor Murphy announced the expansion of 10 to 25 people for outdoor gatherings, and kept the indoor gatherings at 10.

Until governors change the executive order on a state level, it appears Trump’s announcement will not carry weight to change the executive order in place.

  1. Why are masks not being required like in Brooklyn and 5 towns? My husband was literally the only one in our neighborhood indoor minyan with a mask and he got crazy looks. Shouldn’t this be an obvious social action?

    • Social distancing at this point in covid-19 time line is all about presidential election politics, not so much medical concerns. After 60 day of this craziness most people had enough of marginally effective medical Chumros.
FYI only N95 mask will protect your husband from the rest of mispalelim.
Blue mask is basically a Purim custom.

      • Because if everyone there wore a mask (surgical “blue” not n95) that would protect anybody from infecting each other because those “prevent” the wearer from spreading their own germs! Just because the past 2 months were annoying and different doesn’t mean we should just burn out and give everything up.

        • Surgical masks does NOT filter out the virus, it will only help reduce big droplets (*Read REDUCE, not stop) basically it dosnt really help.

  2. Trump said to open shuls he didn’t say to lift all restrictions. It really changed nothing as far the shuls that were already open, with 10 people limits. The are cooperating with the President the headlines are misleading.

  3. there was one shul that was closed down in lakewood over shabbos. i heard from a very reliable source that this was from mesira and once the police are called, they have to respond to the call.

  4. The rule about indoor gathering being limited to 10, is 100% garbage! There’s no rhyme or reason for that whatsoever. If they would have said 25% of capacity, 50% the capacity, or something like that, then it would have made sense but to limit it to 10 just shows that they are being a bunch of power hungry rotten people of canine origin.

    They are roshayim!

    • Masks are for situations where you can’t stay 6 feet away from others, like in stores. In shuls you can stay in your seat/spot for the whole davening.

  5. Of course things changed this shabbos. some Shuls in our area had minyan but one had to register prior to shabbos to keep the limit. However, i dont understand why NO ONE is wearing MASK except for my husband. This should be enforced !

  6. After unprecedented 60+ day of “Public heath emergency” and “Shelter in place” most people had enough. Democrat Governors cried “wolf” for too long!

  7. CDC, and Mayo Clinic etc all recommend masks. Go to shul gezunterheit, according to legal guidelines obviously, but why in the world not wear a mask?????????????

We’re so machmir in everything under the sun. What’s wrong with keeping v’enishmartem, which is a d’oraysa!!!!

    • You are correct. Unfortunately, Veniishmartem is a d’oraysa. If it were stam a “minhag balma-” people would be super machmir!!!

  8. Obviously people are ignoring the letter from r chaim Kanievsky we.still have to wear masks as brought down by him pointing to simian תקנד. סייף_ו in the biur halacha.

    • Please keep that in mind as well!!! I don’t know where you saw a letter about wring masks, but could be, but I saw a letter that he said shuls and yeshivos should reopen.

  9. Ruthy: Dont you know the virus doesn’t enter essential stores and now houses of worship?
    (Sarcasm)
I was is a super market and a chevra man was wearing his mask dangling from an ear. I told him I am no expert on the respiratory system but I don’t think it works that way. He waved me off.
Unless we all take this seriously I fear there will be more tragedy.

  10. Because masks aren’t required by law. It can only be enforced by grocery store owners. It’s very hard to daven with a mask.

  11. The question is less about the law and all about what is truly safe.
Do masks protect? If “yes”, or even “maybe” then regardless of politics or “sick of it” we need to wear them. Not for me, for others.

Do masks protect? What is the science?

  12. @ say it like it is is 100% right.
To say a small shul and a big have the same limit of 10 people is absolutely senseless. To say, in a shul like Ateres Yeshaya, or R’ Gissinger shul to only put 10 people is insane, I’m sorry.
It’s a political power grab and we need to see it as such.

  13. How is the biur halacha mashma that we are chyav to wear a mask?? Total amaratzus!
Also not everyone agRees that’ masks are safer.
    It’s all political garbage.
    Just use your own seichel.
If your husband doesn’t feel safe he can stay home.

  14. Masks are required inside AT ALL TIMES. If you cannot adhere to this, you should be prepared for the consequence. If everything is SO relaxed in Brooklyn, Monsey, Toronto like you think, go there. Stop bullying those who are rightfully still cautious.

  15. If it’s all about social distancing, then shuls should be limited according to capacity, not by how many. If it’s a large shul, then more people should be allowed to attend.

  16. Just remember, on Purim and the week afterwards, the same people that are saying now that Corona is over and done with, were saying that Corona is not gonna come.
There are 70 niftarim in Lakewood now.

  17. Keep in mind that wearing a mask for prolonged amounts of time will deprive your brain of Oxygen and can result in serious side effects. If you decide to wear a mask in Shul make sure that you open it to breathe once every ten minutes. It is a question of vaday Pikuach Nefesh. Additionally, it should be noted that masks are not medically required in places where there is social distancing.Lets not forget that masks were not required in the beginning.

    • @Unmaked – “Lets not forget that masks were not required in the beginning”

LETS ALSO NOT FORGET THE TRAGEDY R”L THAT HAPPENED AT THE BEGINNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why in the world would you look at the beginning when we had catastrophic results?

Wasn’t there a reason that our Hishtadlus changed?????????????

  18. We have seen many parts of the country, many parts of NY, and even here in Lakewood, where people are not being careful about masks and social distancing, yet we have not seen a resurgence of new cases. There is no evidence of a second wave. The predictions about this virus were all wrong. When will people start looking at the evidence and stop just repeating the unfounded statements.
To those who want to wear a mask, you’re welcome to continue to do so. What happened to the democratic mantra of “my body, my choice”. If you wear a mask and I don’t, I’m only hurting myself. It’s my choice. (That’s assuming the mask actually does anything). If you are afraid, you have the freedom to stay home. 60% of the deaths are long term care facility related. How is that a public health crisis. If there is a fire in Newark, do you evacuate Lakewood, because it can spread? If social distancing works in Walmart and target, why won’t it work in shul and small businesses? I have yet to see anyone even try to answer this, and instead they just respond with a bunch a false equivalencies.
For historical perspective, the Nazi’s assured the Jews that moving to ghettos would be for their benefit. This was coming from the most cultured send civilized democracy. No, Murphy is not a Nazi, but we need to judge for ourselves the true intention of the continued lockdown.

    • The mask is about protecting OTHERS from YOU. Wearing a mask will stop your exhaled droplets from reaching others. The regular masks will not protect the wearer.

Basically only N95 masks will protect the wearer; and only if tightly fitted to the skin. Obviously, if you have a beard, that cannot be done…

So basically the only solution is for everyone in shul to wear a mask…

  19. To ikdwresident. I didn’t know you were an infectious disease specialist.I’m sure fauci and cdc will take into consideration your opinion.

  20. I see a lot of emotion here. Can anyone show any scientific evidence AT ALL that masks do anything to prevent virus transmission in a properly spaced shul environment?
Of course not, because there is none. At the beginning of all this they said not to wear masks that they cause more issues and make you touch your face more. Masks are actually very unhealthy and can cause respiratory acidosis when worn too long. So if you feel that others need to wear masks to make you happy perhaps you are not yet ready to come into a public place such as a shul.

    • Proof???? In kol hatorah kulo everyone here is machmir on a safek, and sfek sfaika to be yozte every shita l’chol hadeios!!!

And here with a shaila of a d’oraisa, you want proof????

It’s clear that a piece of cloth in front of your mouth will reduce your exhaled vapors from going into the air. It’s a dovur poshut. Otherwise, your exhaled breath stays in the air for two hours WHEN INDOORS. You don’t need a r’aya for it, but if you do, feel free to read up at CDC or Mayo clinic etc.

As to why they changed their mind? In the beginning they didn’t realize how serious it is. Do a little homework from reputable sources my friend.

And if YOU have health issues with wearing a mask, then YOU stay home. Why should be be allowed to be chav l’acherim??

I don’t believe you are a Rov in town, but if you are, please forgive me. And I would welcome you to provide your contact info through tls. I would love to discuss this further.
