Toms River Approves Temporary Outdoor Dining During COVID-19 Emergency; Lakewood Expected To Follow

The Toms River Township Council has unanimously approved a resolution that would allow for temporary outdoor dining during the COVID-19 public health emergency.

Under the resolution, a section of the Township Land Use Code will be amended for special event applications to allow for outdoor tables, chairs, umbrellas and benches for food establishments. The $100 permit fee is waived. The policy will take effect when permitted by Executive Order of the Governor.

Council President Maria Maruca said, “The Council has been working together to help our local businesses. We are being proactive so that once the governor does permit outside dining, Toms River will be ready for our restaurants.”

Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles tells TLS Lakewood is working on this development.

“I’ve been in contact with the governor’s office over the weekend,” says Coles. “They indicated, phase 2 regulations, which include dining, will be released next week.”

The Mayor says he has asked Building Department head Mike Saccomanno to develop plans for the Township to easily approve regulations to allow outdoor dining, including possibly making space in municipal lots available.

“I’m going to try to have our restaurants contacted early next week to see what their plans are, and work with them and their landlords if parking lot space is needed,” Coles said.
