  1. Let’s all answer this survey responsibly when it reopens for input.

Let’s not forget what’s happening in Eretz Yisroel with 270 sick students since the schools reopened.
By the first wave Lakewood was lagging behind Yerushalayim by just 10 days, but we unfortunately fared much worst per capita.

Hope the lesson we learned just 3 months ago doesn’t go to waist, and that we carefully observe the current situation in Eretz Yisroel to learn how to reopen in the safest way possible.

    • israel shut down so early so people were not exposed to it. so yes they initially saved many lives, however there was much less exposure etc. Lakewood had a much higher level of cases initially so even if we reopen schools normally we wont have a surge of cases since most people were already exposed to the virus..

      • rm – According to your logic, why are Bnei Brak schools also affected by the new wave then?

Most of the people being tested for antibodies in Lakewood are negative, so before publishing an “expert” opinion we better review the facts on the ground.

No there is no basis to think that we’ll be better off in the face of a second wave than Eretz Yisroel.

        • @jaxonite according to bikur cholim almost 70% of people taking their anti body tests are positive. No one is saying there won’t be new cases. See the reports out of Italy this week, their doctors are saying that the new cases entering hospitals, the virus is much weaker. TIME TO REOPEN EVERYTHING! If you are scared stay home!

          • Is that accurate? Chemed wrote in an article last week that most of the antibody testing is coming back negative.

I do not understand why those who have the data on Lakewood are not releasing it in real time data so we each can make our own informed decision.

All we have right now is everyone acting on hearsay and theories. Why are we being left in the dark?

          • @what are you talking about? Of course 70% of people tested by Bikur Cholim for antibodies were positive, if that is true. Most of the people getting antibody tested by Bikur Cholim are testing themselves because they had the virus! Such brilliance.

          • FYI If the 70% figure was accurate we would have reached herd immunity by now.

I just checked with Chemed a few minutes ago, and NO… We have NOT reached herd immunity.

  2. The situation in Israel was for older kids, not toddlers.

The responsible thing is to reopen.

What happened to data and science backing decisions? This is insane.

  3. So when do we say it is ok to expose everyone once again and see what happens. If there are no new cases or very few now then what are we waiting for? Zero is not an acceptable number, because then we should never open ever because Strep, common flu, diarrhea, and a bunch of other things are contagious and we don’t require zero for those things. Second wave shmecond wave, are we going to close every winter in the height of viruses? People are committing suicide at rates higher than those dying from catching the virus now. I don’t know it for fact but that’s what I’m hearing from experts with no less credentials than the experts we are following regarding the pandemic. Let insanity reign!!!

    • From the Merriam-Webster:
A Pandemic is an outbreak of a disease that occurs over a wide geographic area and affects an EXCEPTIONALLY high proportion of the population.
EXCEPTIONAL = RARE. The flu is not rare.
If we could save lives during this pandemic by reopening safely, wouldn’t it be shameful not to do so and wait for people to start dying before reinstating those precautions? Wouldn’t you go to the greatest extents to save even a few moments of one life?

  4. Did anyone forget the basis for closing down the country was to Flatten the curve? – we did that good and well!! Now it’s time open up Everything back up! If things get bad we can always close down again.. What are we doing? The dollar, the economy is going to crash. America is not invincible as many people think we can end up like third world countries and starve! Let’s go!!

    • Having lost a close relative..
Money comes and goes and it can be corrected..
The economy can be built up to be much better..
But a life can’t be brought back…. The risks aren’t completely over yet..

  5. Forgive me Rabbi Schnall, but I have zero confidence that the government has any interest whatsoever in our input. Who compiled the language of this survey, Agudas Yisroel or the State of New jersey? No matter, either way it is merely a tactic to placate us into into thinking that our input is of any consequence. It is like a recording that goes, “if you would like to to push a button, press 1 now.”

In any event Murphy’s law will prevail. Governor Murphy will choose the path that causes the most possible harm at the worst possible time

  6. @JAXONITE
You made me laugh. People testing at CHEMED are people who did not get symptoms and want to know if they perahps had it anyway. Of course most people are testing negative. A more accurate numebr would be that 40-50% of the Jewish community in Lakewood had it (extrapolating from NY’s numbers as provided by Governor Cuomo).
