Lakewood Fire Department adds three new full-time firefighters

The Lakewood Fire District has appointed three new full-time firefighters to its ranks, following a vote at a special public meeting on July 6.

Fire Commissioner Larry Loigman said, “I was pleased to support this expansion of our career staff, as recommended by the fire chiefs and the administrator. Lakewood continues to grow at a tremendous pace, and this will help assure the protection of our residents and businesses.”

Lakewood’s fire protection is provided by a combination of career and volunteer fire companies, managed by the Board of Fire Commissioners. The paid (civil service) firefighters man the fire station on a 24-hour a day basis; the volunteers respond when summoned, to deal with simultaneous calls or larger fires.

“Working together, under the unified direction of the fire chief and two assistant chiefs, the fire department maintains an excellent record of keeping residents safe and property losses to an absolute minimum, resulting in the lowest possible fire insurance rates,” Loigman said.

Loigman noted that the volunteer companies are always interested in receiving membership applications from local residents. After substantial training, members will be on a path to helping the community in firefighting and other exciting programs. 1. This is actually great news. In the past few months I’ve spoken to several firefighters in our area. Based on sq. Miles and number of residents, Lkwd Twsp is short FIFTY volunteer Firefighters. That’s a LOT. So, We really needed these new career FFs. And I dont wanna hear anyone complaining about our higher taxes. This will cost you about $100 a YEAR, max.
    Well worth it, IMHO.

  2. This is a mixed review. Good news we are getting more paid people, but you say we were 50 volunteers short, people may not want to volunteer if they know there are so many paid that will respond before they are called to service.
Good for the Town bad for the volunteers.
